AirPods Pro keep randomly connecting to my iPhone while they are still in its case

My AirPods Pro have the latest firmware. For some crazy reason, when the buds are still in its case, it will randomly connect (momentarily) to my iPhone and then disconnect again. In fact, it will do this to whatever Apple device is nearby (my iPad Pro, my M1 Mac Mini, etc.). It's super annoying because when it does this, it will a) stop the audio from playing on the device because it's redirecting to my AirPods (that are still in the case!) and b) it quickly disconnects from the device, but it pauses whatever I was playing at the time in doing so.

I've seen other people post about this problem on this forum, but no one has come up with a solution. I've tried "forgetting" the AirPods and reconnecting them and it still happens. Again, this is intermittent and random, but happens quite frequently.

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 15.1.1

M1 Mac mini 2020, MacOS 12.0.1

It's nice to know I'm not alone with this bug of the AirPods pro randomly connecting while in their case - it's been a journey.

  • Cleaned the airpods pro - continued to happen
  • Got the airpods pro headphones only replaced - continued to happen
  • Got the airpods pro case only replaced - continued to happen
  • Got a brand new - off the shelf - pair of airpods pro + case - continued to happen
  • Restored my iphone - still happening

Not to mention resetting the AirPods Pro themselves multiple times. Using iPhone 12 mini with latest ios + firmware, automatic ear detection off. Never experienced this issue until a few months ago.

Adding a +1 to this in hopes it helps get the attention of the powers that be.

Glad to know it’s not just mine AirPods Pro that does this. If I’m in the car using the cars Bluetooth they will connect, if using iPad and Bluetooth speaker they will connect. I’ve tried all the “tricks” ie. forgetting, resetting, auto ear detection has been off for months. I’ve cleaned connections and made sure lid can close completely.

Seems like a known issue but theres no available solution other than unpairing/pairing each time one uses them. Which is pretty annoying.

My automatic ear detection has always been on and this still happens to me. For whatever reason, it's now happening constantly. It interrupts my work Zoom meetings. "forgetting the device" is not a "fix", rather a workaround that's not acceptable to have to reconnect them every time you want to use them. Since I use a Mac for work, ipad for personal and iPhone, it disconnects them from all my devices. For $250, this issue needs to get fixed by Apple ASAP.

After almost three years I have come to the conclusion that Apple AirPods Pro are an AWFUL PRODUCT.

I can't begin to describe the problems I've had with them, with both airpods being replaced under warranty TWICE because of distortion issues -- and now this problem.

So it's very frustrating when you go to bed in the evening with your airpods fully charged assuming that you will then wake up and go for a run with your fully charged airpods, only to discover that they have NO CHARGE because they've apparently been connected to your phone all night and PLAYING MUSIC IN THE CASE WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING.

And it's not the pods themselves; this has happened across the last two pairs. I can only assume it's the firmware.

SO PLEASE FIX IT.

Wow glad that so many other people are getting this exact same issue - I thought I was going mad.

While the audio cut-outs in the car are annoying the biggest issue for me is the AirPods in the case.... cutting into my zoom meetings. I'll literally be talking or someone will be talking to me, and next thing up pops a message on my zoom that my airpod pro's has connected to the audio. Then I look like a clown fiesta in front of everyone and have to try and explain. Infuriating!!!!

Got my airpod pros in Feb 22. Same issue. Random airpod connection with the case closed. What I haven’t heard anyone say is reset the phone. (Right button, volume down until the Apple logo appears). That fixes it for a while, but not completely… this stinks. Too much $$$ to have a half baked product with glitches. Please fix. Annoying to no end. I may go back to wired headphones - heaven forbid…

So this seemed to have worked for me, given that you have to manually select the airpods to connect, but it saves you from impairing or turning off your BT.

I paired my airpods to a NON Apple device (make sure it's the last device you pair it to and I leave the non Apple device off) and my airpods don't seem to automatically search for my apple products anymore..
