Turn off Auto-Enhance / edit on iPhone

Whenever I take a photo on my Iphone 13 Pro, a few seconds after the photo auto enhance, making it look terrible. I notice a change of color, increase of sharpness and crazy shadow lifting.

I've researched and looks like a lot of people have the same issue and no solution.

Any updates, any success stories on solving this?

The auto enhancement is aweful. Apple PLEASE add an option to turn it of or at least make it possible to drastically decrease the effect. The only solution I’ve found for now is to turn off auto HDR in Photos and use Burst mode and take at least 2 pics and use one of those. This is not acceptable!

I’ve learned that you can screen record while in the camera app and by doing so you’ll catch that second of a glimpse of the original version of the photo. With that, you can go into the screen recording and screen shot the original version of the picture. A bit tedious and a lot of extra steps but it does get you that original version of the photo!

I have an iphone 11 ( I’ve stopped getting new ones because they are just too expensive and frankly I don’t need all those features. I just get refurbished ones on ebay). Even this phone enhances photos. I was trying to capture a really cool moonlight scene and the stupid thing kept enhancing small bits of light coming from other places, thus ruining the photo. I just want the photo to look like what I see.

Thanks for voicing this because I’m EXHAUSTED. I just spent over a thousand dollars on the iPhone 15 pro max and it’s unbelievable to me that this is the camera that it comes with. Every time I take a photo it looks awful. I came here seeking help just to find that there are countless people with the same issue and Apple - a company that supposedly prides in creating customer centered products - has done nothing about it. I’m beyond disappointed.

PLEASE get rid of this feature or provide a way to turn it off! I am a student with visual disability and I use Apple products for note taking in class primarily because of the ease of taking pictures of lecture slides and whiteboard material and incorporating it into my notes. The automatic contrast makes it impossible for me or any of my transcribing software to see any pictures I take. I have been a loyal Apple customer for years and currently have 8 Apple devices, but this one feature renders most of them useless for my primary purpose of using them. If this feature is not fixed, I will have to switch to another platform for my next phone, tablet, and laptop purchases.

upgraded from iPhone 11 to the 15 plus and the camera auto adjust is TERRIBLE!!! The photo is drastically different from what is in the viewfinder when taking the photo. What’s worse is that if you’re a person of colour - their stupid photo adjust makes you look GRAY and textured hair will look like static. Really Apple?? A mandatory auto adjust that is only somewhat bearable for white people??? And no way to turn it off???

I 100% agree with you. Part of what this auto enhancement thing does is de-noise the photos because Apple doesn’t want you to see how noisy their cameras really are. Then it adds a crap ton of sharpening to try to compensate for this. This is why you end up with the mosaic and less detail. Apple will not allow you to turn it off because then people who don’t know what they’re talking about will say the iPhone camera is too noisy. In my opinion, I’d rather have the noise or, dare I ask, THE CHOICE.

Auto Enhance is just disgusting. I try to take product shots to use on my online stores, but nothing is true to color. I don’t dare take group shots of different color variants. Otherwise, I have to take it into Photoshop and mask out each product to individually color correct each one. I’ve tried shooting on dark and light backgrounds with a gray card and nothing works. Every darker color is brightened for some reason. Even my RAW images seem to be brighter and don’t come near true color when white balance is adjusted. It takes far too much effort to get my photos to be color correct.

We need a way to turn Auto Enhance off. We need control over HOW it corrects if we decide to turn it on. We need to be able to take color accurate photos that need only minimal post work in Photoshop.

I went from an iPhone 10X to the 14 Pro simply because the camera was ‘better’, but I never spent this much time fixing photos from my 10X as I have with this 14 Pro. It’s insane.

None of the ‘fixes’ or workarounds have helped at all for me.

PLEASE, Apple, give us an update to allow us to turn this disaster off or at least let us choose HOW it should ‘enhance’ the shots.

P.S.

Those who say turning off the ‘View Full HDR’ fixes this are out of your minds. If it was only viewing badly on our phones or in our albums, then it would look great on our computers and in our photo editing apps. It doesn’t though. It looks just as awful everywhere it goes. The ‘enhancement’ is built into the image.

SO frustrating. My iPhone 6 took waaaaay better photos than my new 14. I regret buying this phone. I wish I sought out a refurbished model from before deep fusion (the effect that looks gross) became a problem. The worst part is that skin looks so bad! I took a picture of my hand holding something and I looked dead. I don't like the .HEIC files either. They are not compatible with many programs. I helped a coworker put together a slideshow presentation and we had to convert every photo, ugh. I These awful new photos are also impossible to edit on Instagram. I am surprised Apple isn't motivated by that even if they don't care about customer feedback. I won't get an iPhone again if this isn't fixed. </3

It seems like deep fusion doesn't happen in screenshots or live photos if you choose a new key photo. This effect does happen on the key photo that is automatically selected. Turning off HDR in settings does not seem to solve the issue.

i messed around a little and found out how to change it! so first turn of hdr, which should be on the top left of the camera app. then, click the arrow on the top that shows the extra settings, click the second circle on the bottom (it should be a circle with partial stripes) and then drag it to the left so it goes from “auto” to “off”. hope this helps!

Just upgraded iPhone 13 plain from iPhone 11 plain which I have been using since 2019; almost 5 years. To my utter shock and horror the selfies are horrible. All lightings disappear and becomes darker. It is very frustrating, my 11 took amazing selfies with all natural lighting; I'm super regretful for upgrading. The only thing that works is when you use the burst button but all other pictures are horrible. Apple plz give us an option to remove this auto enhancement . We hate it.

Hi,

Unfortunately, we cannot turn off the Auto enhancement feature on the iPhone. It's terrible, I know. However, there are a few tricks that you can try to stop auto-enhancing your photos at some level. These are some tricks that worked for one of my friends to correct their camera settings.

1. Turn off the HDR video feature. It will stop making your photos brighter and help you take original pictures. Go to Settings > Camera > Record Video > Turn off HDR video

2. Turn off the Night Mode. It will automatically enable you to capture video in low-light conditions. Open Camera > Click on Night Mode icon > Turn it off.

3. Turning off Smart HDR can capture original photos with better quality. Go to Settings > Camera > Turn off Smart HDR.

You can use other solutions to turn on the Auto Enhance feature on your iPhone. You can look for other workarounds here:

One of the solutions mentioned helps you fix your problem.
