BT devices not being seen as audio devices after Monterey 12.1 update

Ever since the 12.1 update to Monterey I find that all of my BT audio devices (headset and speaker) are not being recognised as audio devices by the System Preferences => Sound. They are available within any app that uses audio though, e.g. Zoom/Garageband/VLC/etc.

I currently have a case open. However, the only advice I'm given is to re-install the OS, which then results in the same issue recurring.

However, I have found a workaround.... If I kill the coreaudiod daemon, which the system then restarts. I can then see all of the BT devices listed in System Preferences => Sound.

When I boot in Safe mode the BT devices also work. Since I don't have any user applications starting at boot time, I am not sure what is different between booting in Safe and Normal mode. The above would imply that the coreaudiod daemon behaves differently though.

I've now purchased an SSD Thunderbolt disk to use as my MacOS system disk. This appears to have resolved this issue, as well as some other outstanding issues. It would appear that having an HD as the system disk does not work well with most of the MacOS versions. This is interesting to learn, since the iMac I purchased was sold with only an internal HD as standard.

Safe Boot will do a Repair Disk, clear cache files and Eliminate Third Party software, extensions and fonts from loading.

It will also load the minimum Apple Process to make the computer function.

To test further - it is suggested to Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac and log out of Mail Admin Account and into the new account. Then boot normally and Test if the Issue is presented.

If not affected by the issue in new account - this could be an indication of something in the Main User account playing up.

To really see what could be the issue - one may what to >>>

Suggest downloading the Application Etrecheck directly from a well Respected ASC Contributor.

The application is free or paid from added features.

Run the application with Full Disc Access ( Security & Privacy - Full Disc Access ).

It will take a Snap Shot -  both the hardware and software.

The Report will Not Reveal Any Personal Information.

Post back the Full Report - copy and paste - using the Additional Text Icon ( 3rd Icon to last )

We can have a look at the report for possible issues and may have possible suggestions to resolve the issues.

Any Third Party Applications that will interfere with the normal operation of the OS, alter, modify, remove or delete or attempt to do so is an invitation for disaster and may require a Reinstallation of the OS.

This includes AntiVirus, Disk Cleaners, Disk Optimizes, UnInstaller etc.

The The Built in Security  is all that is required.

See attached Etrecheck report. The drive listed as too slow is the original internal HDD, which I no longer use as the Mac system drive. I use an external USB attached SSD drive now, which improves the system speed considerably from the internal Mac HDD provided as the original purchase.

I have always had 2 user accounts on my iMac. This issue occurs on both accounts.

You will see Google Drive and Dropbox running as login processes, but they have been added after I discovered the workaround. So they wouldn't have had anything to do with the issue.

@P. Phillips - thanks for having a look.

You should be able to see that my OS disk is a Lacie SSD disk. The HDD is not used for the OS. Neither is the Crucial disk. However, both disks contain copies of old Mac OSX systems. And it seems that a Mac will consider any copy of Applications as a potential application, as can be seen when I select to Open With on any file in Finder - See example below

So the listed x86 apps and leftover elements are on these old OS copies. I don't use these old applications, so I think they shouldn't affect the performance on my iMac.

I don't use the Serviio application at all, so I can safely remove it.

I do see an audio plug-in for the Background Music app, which I'll have a look at. I can't recall now why I've installed this app. I'll probably try removing it for now and see if that helps.

The BT issue maybe directly related to Sound Blaster and otherThird Party Audio software. Since I=the issue is not presented in Safe Mode as the Third Party Software would not be loading

Major Issues:

Anything that appears on this list needs immediate attention.

Hard drive too slow - The hard drive in this computer is too slow.

disk0 - APPLE HDD HTS541010A9E632 1.00 TB (Mechanical - 5400 RPM)

A - No matter how clean the software is on this computer - it will always be slow and especially running the Newest version of Monterey. A Rotational Drive was good up to Mojave 10.14 but there after in Catalina and above, the performance is going to take a Major Hit.

External USB 480 Mbit/s USB

disk2 - Crucial_ CT256M550SSD 256.06 GB

A - Not sure if one has attempted to create an Artificial Fusion Drive where by the SSD is loading the Application and and the Rotational Drive for Storage. Nothing will be faster than an ALL SSD Drive for all usages.

External USB 5 Gbit/s USB

disk4 - LaCie Mobile Drive 2.00 TB (Solid State - TRIM: No)

A - Not sure if one has attempted to create an Artificial Fusion Drive where by the SSD is loading the Application and and the Rotational Drive for Storage. Nothing will be faster than an ALL SSD Drive for all usages.

Clean up - There are orphan files that could be removed.

A - Review all deleted Applications of Left-Over Elements of them still on the computer.

System modifications - There are a large number of system modifications running in the background.

Launchd: /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.creative.trustudiopc_le.plist

Executable: /Library/Application Support/Sound Blaster/CTHelper

Details: Exact match found in the legitimate list - probably OK

A - suggest verifying their Software is macOS Monterey Compatible

Launchd: /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.serviio.server.plist

Executable: /bin/bash '/Library/Application Support/Serviio/bin/serviio.sh'

A - as per their Web Site Only 64-bit OSX machines are supported, with OSX 10.8 minimum and Zero Mention on Monterey macOS 12 Compatible

Launchd: /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.privileged_startx.plist

Kernel extensions present - This computer has kernel extensions that may not work in the future.

There are reports appearing on the ASC Forums regarding failed installation of Monterey on older Qualifying Apple Computers. In most cases this is related to having a NON Apple Original internal drive ?

The EFI Boot ROM included in Monterey is verifying for Original Apple Drive and if not found , may Balk or fail to upgrade to Monterey.

Reports indicate the EFI BOOT ROM is Required to Flash the Computer and is a  requirement for a Successful Monterey Installation.

To have achieved what one purports to achieved would have meant Monterey would have to had been installed on the Internal Drive first.

Otherwise and based upon all reports, Monterey would not and could Not Be installed on an External Drive.

I boot in Recovery Mode and select to install Monterey from the internet onto my USB attached SSD and this works every time. I've done this repeatedly now in trying to resolve this issue. I've never had Monterey installed on my internal HDD as I switched over to using the USB attached SSD as my system drive several versions of Mac OS ago.

BTW - my BT headset actually works once I've connected to it after a boot. However, it doesn't show as an output device in the Sound pane of System Preferences. It does show as an input device though because it has a built-in mic. If I change the output volume via the Sound pane, then this changes on my headset. This leads me to believe this is some issue with the Sound pane in System Preferences rather than anything to do with BT or audio on the Mac.
