Apple CarPlay not working after iOS 15.2 update

I have iPhone 11 with 15.2 update. I have an 18 Chevy Cruze. Before iOS 15.2, I hadn’t updated out of the last 14 iOS version. So I recently updated straight to 15.2. CarPlay functions fully except for ONE THING: whenever I use the button on my steering wheel to have Siri place a call, Siri will say “ok calling….” And then nothing comes out of the speakers. The recipient of my call says they answer the call and it’s just static. Now, if I place the call manually either through my phone or by pressing the buttons on my radio, it goes through just fine. But using the dictation feature through the steering wheel causes a glitch I guess? It just won’t come through the speakers. I have reset my car infotainment system to factory, I have reset all CarPlay settings on my phone. Nothing works so far. The problem is the update. My phone/CarPlay has functioned through all the updates until the 15 version. I can receive calls. I can make calls manually but I can’t use the button on the steering wheel to make a call. Now that defeats the purpose of handsfree doesn’t it? Something was changed during the update or something caused a glitch. Anyone else having this issue?

Sorry to hear some of you are having issues.

I'm just saying, if this were a widespread problem, everyone would likely experience it. Maybe it is an iOS 15.2 issue; perhaps it is not. All I can say is I use CarPlay daily with my iPhone 11 running 15.2 and do not have a problem. I know that does not help your situation other than to say that this is not a major 15.2 issue.

Have you tried some of the simple stuff like...

  • A different cable
  • Re-pairing your phone to your car (and explicitly removing the CarPlay configuration and redoing it)
  • Restart your iPhone and, if applicable, restart your car's infotainment system.
  • Make sure Siri is enabled.
  • Make sure CarPlay is not restricted. Some do not know you can block Carplay from being used. This is done under Screentime, I think.
  • Similarly, iOS 15 introduced the "Focus" feature, and perhaps your current settings are messing up CarPlay. I'll admit, the Focus feature does feel confusing, and I stumble over it from time to time doing other things.
  • Check whether Carplay is allowed when locked.

Yes I believe you are correct. After much troubleshooting I discovered that it seems to be a Bluetooth issue. When I created the post, I was ignorant to the fact that carplay and Bluetooth are not one in the same exactly. After all my research, I have discovered the issue lies with the Bluetooth connectivity. Which is still odd since all my other Bluetooth devices work fine. So the update probably caused a Bluetooth compatibility issue with my Chevy and Chevy cannot do anything for me because they probably don’t update their infotainment systems enough to have any knowledge on how to help me. We are kinda in the “birthing process” of all this technology with our phones connecting to our cars and being highly compatible In so many ways, so it could be that the car companies need to step up a little more and keep their infotainment systems updated regularly to keep up with the ever changing technology with our phones. It’s just sad because they offer these “tech packages” when you buy your car, in which you pay for, and then when your devices update, they don’t have the ability to update the cars to stay compatible. Maybe this will change in the future when people make more of a fuss about it. But yes, as you said, it’s definitely not a CarPlay issue (I know this now :):):)) but a Bluetooth connection issue in the car. And in my case, it’s just my car that has issues with my Bluetooth.

i have an Apple lighting cable that I use to connect and as far as I can tell, everything works fine that way. Just that Bluetooth feature is snagging me up.

so thanks for all the feedback, we will continue to try and figure it out. The update came with a lot of changes…maybe a setting (that was on or off before) needs to be toggled now as it could be causing the Bluetooth issue. I have tried what I feel is everything but after having an iPhone for over 10 years, I discover I am STILL learning new things about these phones regularly.

Through the community, I hope we can get all of our issues figured out!

I have a 2018 Honda Accord Exl and after the 15.2.1 update every time I make a call or receive a call through apple CarPlay it’s a loud buzzing sound causing callers not to hear me and it’s going in and out. The music works fine it’s only the calls that’s making the buzzing noise and it’s really annoying. I hope apple can get this resolved soon

What kind of iPhone do you have? This is the first I’ve heard of someone with the buzzing sound like myself. When it does the buzzing sound, do you have it connected to the car with a cord or is it connected wirelessly through Bluetooth? I’ve found that my issue only occurs when I am connected wirelessly with Bluetooth. And it’s the only Bluetooth issue I have. All my other Bluetooth device connections work fine. Curious to what device you have. Thanks!

I am having issues in my 2022 infiniti qx55. It's not the vehicles... was working just fine before this awful update...it has to be the 15.2.1. My maps will not load at all- apple or google maps. I updated 1-24-22 pm and when I went to work 1-25-22 am... apple map is a grid. Google maps totally blank. I have done all the tips: disconnected blue tooth, reset network, disabled location and renabled it. turned phone on/off. Turned car on/off. NOTHING works. I have been on chat with apple support and they told me that resetting the network would solve the problem. NOPE. Still no maps. And on top of that, the connectivity is also wonky. I am unable to pull up email/apps in order to pick up groceries or curbside shopping packages. NOTHING happens. The screen on my phone just turns white. There is something going on with the connection/carplay/wifi situation. HELP!!!

I have an iphone 13 & carplay worked 100% fine until I did ios update 15.3. I've tried everything suggested by everyone here & everything I could find in google searches. Nothing has fixed it. I use this every day for commuting for WAYZ navigation, handsfree texting & phone calls. Now NOTHING!! This is bogus. Bluetooth works fine, but you can't use that for WAYZ navigation and other apps like carplay. Apple needs to fix this. The common link is Apple CarPlay, not the car models and manufacturers. I drive a 2019 Honda. Should not be having this issue after 2 years of working 100% perfectly. Very frustrated with Apple right now.

I am right there with you jab5465, I have been seeking a real solution since last fall and still no real solutions from Apple other than to blame the car manufacturers which 1)clearly isn't the issue as all of our older versions of iPhone worked and 2) isn't helpful to those of us who have invested in Apple and iPhones. I have a hearing disability and being hands-free is imperative for me, my iPhone X worked just fine in my 2015 Highlander, then with iPhone13 dropped calls. Apple needs to step up and address this issue (truly address it not dance around it) or offer to buy back the iPhone13's because they do not do everything as promised and they are so far ignoring the issue which is being posted by a huge number of Apple customers.

After several chats, phone call, and discussion forum advice, I finally called Infiniti. They told me to plug it into the USB ( not the charging one in the console, but the power one under the dashboard.

he says to keep it plugged in for a week or so and the car would update itself to work with CarPlay/iPhone.

it worked. My maps load now without being plugged in. I still need to test my internet… somehow that was affected as well. While in my car with CarPlay on, I was unable to use apps or check FB or email. Huge hassle when waiting to pick up groceries and you can’t click the “I’m here” button for them to Benny your groceries out. 😡

Have you resolved this issue yet? I have iPhone 8 with 2018 Chevy Cruze, never had a problem until update to 15.3.1. Now battery drains fast, missed calls but phone never rang & cannot use hands free or "hey Siri" in car. Same as you, static on recipients end & phone does not ring through the speakers of the car. I've been on the phone for hours with Apple, AT&T, OnStar & GM. Apple says they never heard of the problem. What a joke. There are pages and pages of these posts online.

No the issue is still happening. The only way to work around it is to plug the phone directly in the car and even then this phone still has issues. Bluetooth doesn’t fully work in the car still. I have done EVERYTHING I can do on my end. Just waiting on apple to pull their heads out their bums and fix it. Two updates and still no fix. It’s pretty sad. My car is up to date and I’ve taken it in to two different Chevy places and they cannot help me. There is no tech they possess that can fix apples tech. Apple has to figure this out. I’ve already decided my next phone isn’t going to be apple because I have to keep my phone on the charger all day for it to stay charged now and it wasn’t like this until the iOS 15 update. My gosh the battery life on this thing was 97% before the update and now I’m facing needing a new battery in what…two months? It’s sick. Paid $800 for a phone that SHOULD last me years and I do one update and it kills it. It’s literally a gimmick to get us to upgrade phones unnecessarily. Sorry but I’m calling it for what it is. They don’t want to make things last long anymore. There is no money in that. They want us to replace replace replace. And it’s sad because I’ve been an apple fan for so long but after this hot mess of an update, I’m looking elsewhere.

I tried my phone in my daughters Honda CRV and it worked fine. She has same iphone13 as me and did automatic update same as me. She has not had any issues in her 2018 CRV. My 2019 CRV would not work no matter what advice I tried. The only thing that fixed the issue for me was a system reset to factory settings on the Honda system. Once it rebooted I plugged in my phone to the car and apple play started right up and saw my phone. 1 week later it stopped working. So I did another system reset and it worked again. 5 days later same problem! I did system reset yesterday and it’s working again. This is crazy. At some point I will likely have to spend considerable time on support call with Apple but I simply don’t have time or desire to do that! Ugh they really need to fix this problem! I love my iphone, macbook, ipad & my office uses macs so I don’t see switching to another platform in my future. I just hope they fix the problem. I had my iphoneSE 2020 on carplay for 2 years with no issues at all. I think it has to be the iphone13 or the recent update that is the problem. I just got the iphone13 at christmas. It only worked for about a month then issues started.
