Apple CarPlay not working after iOS 15.2 update

I have iPhone 11 with 15.2 update. I have an 18 Chevy Cruze. Before iOS 15.2, I hadn’t updated out of the last 14 iOS version. So I recently updated straight to 15.2. CarPlay functions fully except for ONE THING: whenever I use the button on my steering wheel to have Siri place a call, Siri will say “ok calling….” And then nothing comes out of the speakers. The recipient of my call says they answer the call and it’s just static. Now, if I place the call manually either through my phone or by pressing the buttons on my radio, it goes through just fine. But using the dictation feature through the steering wheel causes a glitch I guess? It just won’t come through the speakers. I have reset my car infotainment system to factory, I have reset all CarPlay settings on my phone. Nothing works so far. The problem is the update. My phone/CarPlay has functioned through all the updates until the 15 version. I can receive calls. I can make calls manually but I can’t use the button on the steering wheel to make a call. Now that defeats the purpose of handsfree doesn’t it? Something was changed during the update or something caused a glitch. Anyone else having this issue?

I am pulling the update right now. I will let everyone know if this fixes my issue.

After several attempts at trying to fix this myself, I have come to some more understanding of this glitch. I still don’t know why it’s happening. So, when I’m using straight up Bluetooth as a connection, NO CORD, the glitch happens if I use the command button on the steering wheel to prompt Siri. Siri comes up like normal, I ask Siri to place a call, Siri places call but nothing comes out of speakers and the recipient receives the call but once they answer, all they hear is a very annoying static/buzz. Now my husband discovered that there’s a touch button that looks like a phone on the infotainment system that is capable of switching the phone call from car to phone and back and forth. This button has to be toggled on then back off again, and then suddenly the call comes through the car like normal. It’s so odd. Secondly, if I use the same command button on the steering wheel to let’s say, have Siri send a message with dictation, siri will send the message just fine, but usually siri hangs up the “call” and returns to music or whatever when the message has been sent. NOW, after the 15.2 update, it loops back and asks for another command, in which I say cancel and siri replies with “theres nothing to cancel” and then waits for another command. So I let it go thinking it will just shut off on its own. But nope, it loops back and waits for a command. I have to physically hit the hang up command button on the steering wheel. This is also new after the update.

Now, if I straight up use the Apple USB cord and hook my phone up directly, everything seems to work fine, even through the steering wheel. So I think it’s safe to say that the glitch lies in the Bluetooth connectivity feature. I have tinkered with all the settings and it’s still there. I’m hoping this update fixes the issue. Otherwise my only solution is to make sure my phone is always plugged into the car directly. It’s sad because I love the idea of getting into my car, with my phone in my purse and not having to even think about getting that all connected because it normally did it without me touching anything. I would get in my car and go without even knowing my phone is connecting and things are ready to go. So now I have to make sure I plug my phone in or it won’t work right. I really hope this gets fixed. It’s so odd in how it’s malfunctioning, I will say that! It’s not a consistent “glitch” because CarPlay is working, but it’s not at the same time.

I will post again once I use it with the new update.

Thank you for all the replies, hopefully we can figure it out!!!

I am having issues in my 2022 infiniti qx55. It's not the vehicles... was working just fine before this awful update...it has to be the 15.2.1. My maps will not load at all- apple or google maps. I updated 1-24-22 pm and when I went to work 1-25-22 am... apple map is a grid. Google maps totally blank. I have done all the tips: disconnected blue tooth, reset network, disabled location and renabled it. turned phone on/off. Turned car on/off. NOTHING works. I have been on chat with apple support and they told me that resetting the network would solve the problem. NOPE. Still no maps. And on top of that, the connectivity is also wonky. I am unable to pull up email/apps in order to pick up groceries or curbside shopping packages. NOTHING happens. The screen on my phone just turns white. There is something going on with the connection/carplay/wifi situation. HELP!!!

I have an iphone 13 & carplay worked 100% fine until I did ios update 15.3. I've tried everything suggested by everyone here & everything I could find in google searches. Nothing has fixed it. I use this every day for commuting for WAYZ navigation, handsfree texting & phone calls. Now NOTHING!! This is bogus. Bluetooth works fine, but you can't use that for WAYZ navigation and other apps like carplay. Apple needs to fix this. The common link is Apple CarPlay, not the car models and manufacturers. I drive a 2019 Honda. Should not be having this issue after 2 years of working 100% perfectly. Very frustrated with Apple right now.

I am right there with you jab5465, I have been seeking a real solution since last fall and still no real solutions from Apple other than to blame the car manufacturers which 1)clearly isn't the issue as all of our older versions of iPhone worked and 2) isn't helpful to those of us who have invested in Apple and iPhones. I have a hearing disability and being hands-free is imperative for me, my iPhone X worked just fine in my 2015 Highlander, then with iPhone13 dropped calls. Apple needs to step up and address this issue (truly address it not dance around it) or offer to buy back the iPhone13's because they do not do everything as promised and they are so far ignoring the issue which is being posted by a huge number of Apple customers.

After several chats, phone call, and discussion forum advice, I finally called Infiniti. They told me to plug it into the USB ( not the charging one in the console, but the power one under the dashboard.

he says to keep it plugged in for a week or so and the car would update itself to work with CarPlay/iPhone.

it worked. My maps load now without being plugged in. I still need to test my internet… somehow that was affected as well. While in my car with CarPlay on, I was unable to use apps or check FB or email. Huge hassle when waiting to pick up groceries and you can’t click the “I’m here” button for them to Benny your groceries out. 😡

Have you resolved this issue yet? I have iPhone 8 with 2018 Chevy Cruze, never had a problem until update to 15.3.1. Now battery drains fast, missed calls but phone never rang & cannot use hands free or "hey Siri" in car. Same as you, static on recipients end & phone does not ring through the speakers of the car. I've been on the phone for hours with Apple, AT&T, OnStar & GM. Apple says they never heard of the problem. What a joke. There are pages and pages of these posts online.

I tried my phone in my daughters Honda CRV and it worked fine. She has same iphone13 as me and did automatic update same as me. She has not had any issues in her 2018 CRV. My 2019 CRV would not work no matter what advice I tried. The only thing that fixed the issue for me was a system reset to factory settings on the Honda system. Once it rebooted I plugged in my phone to the car and apple play started right up and saw my phone. 1 week later it stopped working. So I did another system reset and it worked again. 5 days later same problem! I did system reset yesterday and it’s working again. This is crazy. At some point I will likely have to spend considerable time on support call with Apple but I simply don’t have time or desire to do that! Ugh they really need to fix this problem! I love my iphone, macbook, ipad & my office uses macs so I don’t see switching to another platform in my future. I just hope they fix the problem. I had my iphoneSE 2020 on carplay for 2 years with no issues at all. I think it has to be the iphone13 or the recent update that is the problem. I just got the iphone13 at christmas. It only worked for about a month then issues started.

I have a similar issue and it started when I got the phone. Only difference is that sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn’t connect to a phone call made via the steering wheel. It’s a connection issue as when you switch whilst on the phone from Bluetooth CarPlay to speaker phone and back to CarPlay it connects. Has this issue been resolved? I’ve done all the reset malark.

Glad you found a fix for yours! I reset my car system too, but it did nothing. I have reset it through each 15 update as well, took it to the dealer and a dang good mechanic (someone I know) and there’s nothing to be done for my car. It’s the update. The ONLY thing I haven’t done was do a complete reset on my phone but that’s not happening. If I have to wipe and restore my phone to get it to work every time I do an update, well it’s time to switch to a new phone then. My situation for that is unique tho and I can’t entirely put that all on Apple. Where I live, I have no internet. I live in a rural village that has a population of less than 750 ppl and high speed internet doesn’t exist here. (IKR?!?) I also don’t have a computer that can handle a backup…so backing up my phone happens when I am using public WiFi…when I leave my little village and go out into the big wide world which is rare. So, a hard reset is just not an option for me cuz it’s too inconvenient. I would have to take it to a geek and pay to have it done probably. But I know people in the same boat as we all are and they DID do resets on their iphones and it didn’t help so I don’t think a fix is there for me either. One day, we can hope we don’t need to reset and restore to get working technology. I have a son who wants to grow up and work with technology so maybe one day he can fix this for us. He’s 7 now so it will be a bit. Lol!

IT’S AN IOS ISSUE.. ALL THOSE SAYING BY SWITCHING THIS FUNCTION OFF, CHANGING THE CABLE , SETTING MUSIC TO THIS OR THAT , ETC .. these are not logical nor pin point solving the issue for any car owner, or any in dash system .

apple must solve the issue asap in their upcoming ios update. They read our complaints for months now and they should do something. It’s out of out that old iphones works and connected while the new model needs to plug the wire each time to enter everybody’s car …

I suspect that it is not possible to test all the permutations of CarPlay, iPhone models, and audio units. Just like the latest MacOS update mucking up some external monitors on USB-C connections, I suspect something has slipped by Apple engineers and "registered" developers to create this consistently inconsistent issue with CarPlay.

It would be helpful if:

-Apple would follow up with those of us noting issues to ask about the model of head-unit, firmware version, iPhone model, iOS version, method of connection etc, etc. ---So far I've heard only silence.

-Apple wasn't so rabidly paternalistic and would let us roll-back iOS updates. I am willing to bet cash money that my iPhone would start to work with my Alpine head unit if I could (easily) roll back to iOS 13 or 14. ....if only for the sake of testing.

For now, I will continue to use my old iPod Touch running iOS 12. With the exception of its incredibly short battery life, it works without issue with my head unit and CarPlay.
