Apple CarPlay not working after iOS 15.2 update

I have iPhone 11 with 15.2 update. I have an 18 Chevy Cruze. Before iOS 15.2, I hadn’t updated out of the last 14 iOS version. So I recently updated straight to 15.2. CarPlay functions fully except for ONE THING: whenever I use the button on my steering wheel to have Siri place a call, Siri will say “ok calling….” And then nothing comes out of the speakers. The recipient of my call says they answer the call and it’s just static. Now, if I place the call manually either through my phone or by pressing the buttons on my radio, it goes through just fine. But using the dictation feature through the steering wheel causes a glitch I guess? It just won’t come through the speakers. I have reset my car infotainment system to factory, I have reset all CarPlay settings on my phone. Nothing works so far. The problem is the update. My phone/CarPlay has functioned through all the updates until the 15 version. I can receive calls. I can make calls manually but I can’t use the button on the steering wheel to make a call. Now that defeats the purpose of handsfree doesn’t it? Something was changed during the update or something caused a glitch. Anyone else having this issue?

Sorry to hear some of you are having issues.

I'm just saying, if this were a widespread problem, everyone would likely experience it. Maybe it is an iOS 15.2 issue; perhaps it is not. All I can say is I use CarPlay daily with my iPhone 11 running 15.2 and do not have a problem. I know that does not help your situation other than to say that this is not a major 15.2 issue.

Have you tried some of the simple stuff like...

  • A different cable
  • Re-pairing your phone to your car (and explicitly removing the CarPlay configuration and redoing it)
  • Restart your iPhone and, if applicable, restart your car's infotainment system.
  • Make sure Siri is enabled.
  • Make sure CarPlay is not restricted. Some do not know you can block Carplay from being used. This is done under Screentime, I think.
  • Similarly, iOS 15 introduced the "Focus" feature, and perhaps your current settings are messing up CarPlay. I'll admit, the Focus feature does feel confusing, and I stumble over it from time to time doing other things.
  • Check whether Carplay is allowed when locked.

I think there is a more systemic issue with iOS 15.x and Carplay. I have a Toyota vehicle but a 2019 Alpine head unit, amp, and speakers which were all working fine with CarPlay (for over 2 years) until just after I upgraded my iPhone to iOS 15 in Oct., 2021. The head unit just locks up after 20-30 minutes. It will still play music but the display and controls (on the head unit and steering wheel) no longer function.

Note Well: this head unit still works fine with CarPlay and an ancient 6th gen iPod Touch I have running iOS 12. It also works fine with Android Auto and a Pixel phone running Android 12.

--So, Apple, what is the story with iOS 15 and CarPlay????

I have a similar issue and it started when I got the phone. Only difference is that sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesn’t connect to a phone call made via the steering wheel. It’s a connection issue as when you switch whilst on the phone from Bluetooth CarPlay to speaker phone and back to CarPlay it connects. Has this issue been resolved? I’ve done all the reset malark.

Definitely apples issue and I don’t think it will ever be fixed. CarPlay, Bluetooth, the phone itself….just not the same since iOS 15 updates. My iPhone battery is now needing to be replaced and the crap thing about it is, I rarely use this phone on a day to day basis and just sitting there, no Bluetooth on, brightness down and all the bars ticked to preserve battery…it will be dead in a few hours. Hardly no use. And this can all be seen on the battery health section of my phone. Literally went from 100% battery to 23% and the on screen use was 2 mins. I made one phone call. TWO MINUTES of screen time for an entire day and it just dies sitting there. The only thing using my battery is find my iPhone…hmmm…but my luck, the moment i turn that off, I will need it to find my lost iphone right? Even turning that off doesn’t stop the battery drain tho. I wish I didn't update. Before 15, my battery would go 2 days without needing a charge with full use and even then it would be in the 30% range when I charged it. THE VERY DAY I did the iOS 15 update, I had to charge my iphone (was 100% when I updated) cuz the update itself drained the battery and heated it up so bad and I have had to charge it daily, sometimes MULTIPLE times daily, since then.

My phone in my husbands dodge pickup is also so badly glitched I can’t even use Bluetooth or CarPlay AT ALL since the update. He stopped using his CarPlay and Bluetooth all together cuz it doesn’t work and causes the radio itself to stop working all together when you plug a phone in or use CarPlay. And his dodge infotainment system is all updated, equipped with Siri as well but none of this started until the iOS 15 update. Lately, I have been using his truck for my vehicle and it’s a nightmare with the CarPlay and Bluetooth. I gave up too. Not worth the headache.

Two different vehicles, both with the same phone and same iOS, not working…just in our household. But both phones and both SAME vehicles worked PERFECTLY before iOS 15. This is definitely a systemwide issue. Literally the day I updated, I had issues and wanted to go back to 14. Never had this issue with iPhone or any iOS before. This update is a nightmare!!!!!!!

Glad you found a fix for yours! I reset my car system too, but it did nothing. I have reset it through each 15 update as well, took it to the dealer and a dang good mechanic (someone I know) and there’s nothing to be done for my car. It’s the update. The ONLY thing I haven’t done was do a complete reset on my phone but that’s not happening. If I have to wipe and restore my phone to get it to work every time I do an update, well it’s time to switch to a new phone then. My situation for that is unique tho and I can’t entirely put that all on Apple. Where I live, I have no internet. I live in a rural village that has a population of less than 750 ppl and high speed internet doesn’t exist here. (IKR?!?) I also don’t have a computer that can handle a backup…so backing up my phone happens when I am using public WiFi…when I leave my little village and go out into the big wide world which is rare. So, a hard reset is just not an option for me cuz it’s too inconvenient. I would have to take it to a geek and pay to have it done probably. But I know people in the same boat as we all are and they DID do resets on their iphones and it didn’t help so I don’t think a fix is there for me either. One day, we can hope we don’t need to reset and restore to get working technology. I have a son who wants to grow up and work with technology so maybe one day he can fix this for us. He’s 7 now so it will be a bit. Lol!

I am curious, do you have to hold the volume button to reset it every time you use your phone in the car or was it just a one time thing that helped it? I know some people who have found workarounds but they have to do it each time the vehicle is shut off and turned back on again so it’s not a complete fix but it does the trick for now. Thanks!

IT’S AN IOS ISSUE.. ALL THOSE SAYING BY SWITCHING THIS FUNCTION OFF, CHANGING THE CABLE , SETTING MUSIC TO THIS OR THAT , ETC .. these are not logical nor pin point solving the issue for any car owner, or any in dash system .

apple must solve the issue asap in their upcoming ios update. They read our complaints for months now and they should do something. It’s out of out that old iphones works and connected while the new model needs to plug the wire each time to enter everybody’s car …

I'm sure some do use CarPlay. I use CarPlay in my BMW and it is working fine. My coffee friend uses it in his Lincoln and it is working fine. Another thing to know, car makers largely do not make the head units that are installed in their cars, they buy them, and most makers of the head units don't do the coding internally to make CarPlay work with their head unit, the contract for the software. The companies that do the coding are registered Apple developers and they do receive all the beta versions and have tools to report the issues and work with Apple engineers. So why did several beta versions and a Release Candidate get released to them and they didn't notice it wasn't working?

I suspect that it is not possible to test all the permutations of CarPlay, iPhone models, and audio units. Just like the latest MacOS update mucking up some external monitors on USB-C connections, I suspect something has slipped by Apple engineers and "registered" developers to create this consistently inconsistent issue with CarPlay.

It would be helpful if:

-Apple would follow up with those of us noting issues to ask about the model of head-unit, firmware version, iPhone model, iOS version, method of connection etc, etc. ---So far I've heard only silence.

-Apple wasn't so rabidly paternalistic and would let us roll-back iOS updates. I am willing to bet cash money that my iPhone would start to work with my Alpine head unit if I could (easily) roll back to iOS 13 or 14. ....if only for the sake of testing.

For now, I will continue to use my old iPod Touch running iOS 12. With the exception of its incredibly short battery life, it works without issue with my head unit and CarPlay.
