Cloud Library (Apple Music) not syncing properly from Mac to iOS/iPadOS devices

I have an Apple Music subscription and I'm using my cloud music library on all my devices. After upgrading from macOS Big Sur to macOS Monterey 12.1 (and iOS/iPadOS 15.2/15.2.1), my music library is not syncing as it should from Mac to iOS/iPadOS/iCloud.

The following actions are no longer updating my library on iOS/iPadOS/iCloud:

  • Deleting an album/playlist on Mac
  • Rating songs with stars on Mac

When I sync my library manually on Mac (File > Library > Update Cloud Library), any of the two actions mentioned above are reverted: the albums I deleted are added back to the Music app on my Mac and my previous ratings are not visible anymore.

The actions below work fine:

  • Adding music to my library on Mac (gets added on iOS/iPadOS/iCloud as it should)
  • Creating a playlist on Mac (gets added on iOS/iPadOS/iCloud as it should)

Any action works correctly on the iOS/iPadOS -> Mac direction: when I do something on my iPhone or iPad it gets synced to my Mac (rating songs, adding/deleting albums, etc.).

This is a recent problem which didn't exist before. I've seen people sharing here Mac/iOS syncing issues, but I'm not sure they cover these specific actions. Anyone experiencing something similar?

Thanks in advance!

Me too. Issue appears to be fixed with MacOS 12.4.

Hooray.

Both star ratings & album artwork changed on my Mac are updating to iPadOS and iOS devices.

I am on the same boat as most of you, and I guess this is the final nail in the coffin for me to close Apple music subscription. It took me almost 6 months to recreate my library post changing my location, which itself was a huge frustration (and waste of time) and now I am facing problem where updates made through Music app on my Mac Mini M1 (and pro) does not reflect on any of my other devices (Iphone, MacbookPro). I don't use Windows regularly but Itunes on windows still work like charm and changes are immediately synced across all devices. So it seems the problem is the Music app itself and it registered changes only to itself on the local machine and can not sync it across (both in Pro and Mini).

This problem occurs for me, as well. I'm using a 2019 Macbook Pro.

I've tried several solutions, but no solution works permanently. The problem always comes back.

If I restart the mac and then choose my music library (by pressing the option key when I start music) then things will work for a while. Then everything stops synching again, as best I can tell randomly. It's an incredible inconvenience.

I constantly update my library every day via ratings and hotkeys as I listen to music. Now, each day I have to confirm the music app is actually updating—which is a chore.

When I called Apple support I was told that this was some unique issue related to me. I was told that there's nothing wrong with Music or Monterey 12.2.1. However, the problem started for me in February when I updated to Monterey.

I hope a solution is offered soon so I don't have to start looking at competitors.

I had a similar problem (M1 iMac, iPhone 12 and iPad mini 5) with changes I made on my iOS devices not being reflected on my iMac. (BYW I also had a similar issue with the Calendar app.) I was talking to a few Apple Senior Techs and suddenly towards the end of December it "fixed itself". WOW. Unfortunately a few days ago it started again - noticed it when deleting songs on my iMac from a few manual playlists and the changes were not reflected on my iOS devices - and suddenly to day all the syncing in the Music App and the Calendar app started working both ways again. Why - don't have a freaking clue.

And yes, I did see that if I unchecked Syncing with iCloud in the Music App on my iMac and turning it back on the Mac would revert any changes - not send the changes to my devices. Sort of like the Cloud version of my Music Library was agreeing with what was on my iOS devices and changed the iMac library to match them.

As of today, it seems everything is now working as it should: deleting music, rating songs or modifying metadata is now updating my library in the cloud!

Lissy_12 and swandy, thanks for your suggestions. I eventually contacted Apple Support and they recommended submitting feedback to Apple as swandy indicated.

swandy, is the problem fixed for you as well?

Cheers!

I have had this issue for weeks and have followed all advice up to the point that I do not sync Mac Music with anything (turned it off on iPhone and logged out of Apple TV and turned off home sharing) updated to OS12.2 and the issues persist - delete an album from library and it comes back a few minutes later - can't add songs to a playlist about 50% of the time. Bloody ridiculous I buy new equipment and keep updated precisely to avoid these basic operating issues, I've run out of options to try... 🤬

Tech support has been unhelpful thus far, with each allegedly more senior member of the support team asking me to repeat the problem and suggesting I log out and in before getting "disconnected" and sending me a cheeky follow-up email afterwards telling me to enable my library. I then have to wait a good 30mins for my library to load each time. Still an issue here.

Still not resolved even after updates to the latest software. So annoying. Don't waste your time or energy on contacting support.

Switching off and on is the only thing that works for me.

I'm using Monterey 12.3.1 on a Macbook Pro (15-inch, 2019).

I discovered some free third-party software on github that allows me to both install and run iTunes 12.9.5.5 on Monterey 12.3.1.

That third-party software has not been designed or tested for MacOS 12.3.1. However, for me, it is working. iTunes syncs to Apple Music and then stays synched. For me, that solves the problem.

I would mention the free third-party software by name, but I'm not sure if I am allowed to do so here. If you perform an Internet search for it, you should be able to find it.

This is proving to be a good workaround for me.
