maximum items added when trying to pair airtag

I'm trying to connect an AirTag and I get the message Maximum Items added. I have removed my AirPod and all that is connected is my watch, phone & Ipad. What can I do? Apple Support was very little help.

Did yo already try to reset the AirTag?

Any chance you have AirPods connected to your device?

Removing the airpods worked for me. You can pair them later.
