Delete the email account from mail.

Login to AOL on the web and go to account settings then to account security.

Make sure you have 2-step verification enabled.

In AOL account security choose 'generate and manage app passwords'. Enter the name of the app as 'Apple Mail' and generate a one time password (I could only get this to work on Chrome so it might depend on browser settings). Copy this one time password.

Re-add the email account in mail but DO NOT select AOL account. Choose 'Other mail account'.

Use the one time password instead of your normal AOL password to login.

All your emails should now show in mail.

I had this same problem with an AOL account in early February. Suddenly, a few days later, it resolved itself (mostly...for some reason 7 emails remained missing). It was fine until today, when suddenly they disappeared again and my count was once again limited to 9,999. I've also tried out other email clients (e.g. Spark) and they worked fine. So it's clearly not a Yahoo issue nor an AOL issue. It's something in Mac Mail, and none of the support people had any clue about it when I talked to AppleCare.

Yesterday's discussion with a Senior Apple Support person didn't produce the answer to the question of why the Mail program limits the number of messages to 9,999. He said he checked with several Apple Support technicians. None of them reportedly knew about this issue. He was supposed to forward this matter to a higher level at Apple. Still seems strange that after upgrading to Monterey OS the the problem appeared. Then after a small update to Monterey the problem was solved. And then a couple of days later the problem reappeared. Right now it doesn't look like a solution will be available for a while or maybe forever. Annoying..

My Apple discussion also addressed a performance issue with my iMac. Sporadically it freezes and/or restarts/shuts down for unknown reasons. No solutions, but was given an interesting explanation that might be the answer to the problem. My iMac design is a 2015 design, so his thinking is that the old hardware might not be capable of using the new Monterey OS program. This idea is somewhat like a 60 year old runner not being able to keep up with a 20 year old runner. If true, it would mean that lots of others would be having the same problem. I sort of like this idea but can't imagine that Apple would make thousands or maybe millions of IMacs instantly outdated. Am hoping that the next Monterey update will bring back the missing emails. That's all for now.

That's frustrating that they are unaware of the mail issue, because it definitely exists. I have had exactly the same problem for the last few weeks. I'm still on Catalina 10.15.7 for workflow reasons, but in the last few weeks my Mail app has been limiting the Inbox to 9,999 and ignoring any emails before early Jan 2021. I've tried a rebuild, disengaging and reengaging the account, which is a yahoo.mail account. Nothing works. I can access all of my historic emails logging into yahoo mail through a browser, and I can even use the Mail app search or spotlight search to find emails beyond the inbox limit. But I can't browse through the inbox beyond the 9,999 limit.

There has to be a common reason here. Surely we can't be the only users affected?

I just loaded the account in question on an old laptop I had access to, and the limits didn't seem to happen on High Sierra. I was still able to load the account completely. And until this behavior started, it worked for me on Catalina. It was the "upgrade" to Big Sur that seemed to start the problem. FWIW, it also appeared on my iphone as well. So for me, it does appear to be OS related, as it doesn't happen on High Sierra.

Another interesting behavior is that it used to limit me to 9,999 message, but at some point that seems to have been changed to 10,000 even.

My Yahoo mail message count just dropped today to 20000 emails max in Catalina - I actually watched it happening as the count dropped. Seems quite close to the problem others are having with Monterey. Perhaps a problem not specific to the OS version. I looked on Yahoo mail directly through the Safari web browser and saw no decrease or loss in email count (it's waaayy bigger than 20000 and had been showing up identically in the Mac mail app forever - reminding me I have a mail management problem of my own to deal with!). Should I too just wait a bit to see if it resolves itself?

Based on another recent experience with OS Monterey I'm guessing that the email limit is a programming issue...maybe by design or by accident. When I started using Monterey I wasn't able to use my Photo Library with the Screen Save...after the 12.1 update magically I was able to use the Photo Library for Screen Save pictures. With some luck update 12.3 will correct the missing email issue. Have talked with Apple Support and Yahoo about this matter...no answer to the question.

Thanks for the reply and good luck in finding the missing emails. My missing emails showed up recently and everything has been okay since they returned. As I think I said in an earlier note...there must have been a programming issue/error that got corrected. Just my guess. As my friend says "those computer gremlins are interfering again".
