Delete the email account from mail.
Login to AOL on the web and go to account settings then to account security.
Make sure you have 2-step verification enabled.
In AOL account security choose 'generate and manage app passwords'. Enter the name of the app as 'Apple Mail' and generate a one time password (I could only get this to work on Chrome so it might depend on browser settings). Copy this one time password.
Re-add the email account in mail but DO NOT select AOL account. Choose 'Other mail account'.
Use the one time password instead of your normal AOL password to login.
All your emails should now show in mail.
Fingers crossed that it gets fixed for me again. And that you don't have a recurrence yourself. In the meantime, it's incredibly frustrating. And I have no idea why it would suddenly recur unless there was a software update that I'm unaware of that happened automatically. Because it seems odd that it would have been corrected and then got uncorrected again.
Same here. . . very frustrating. I did make a POP3 copy of all my mail after the last episode, so I have copy of it all, but it is a royal pain to have it just disappear from all IMAP. I am also testing with Microsoft Outlook and it seems like IMAP brings all mail in, but I live in Apple world so that makes it more difficult for me.
The same issue here. All was working fine (yahoo mail) and then I was limited to 9999 messages and then went back to the expected number of messages and now back to 9999 as of a few days ago. Any fixes/explanations noted?
Am scheduled for a conversation with an Apple Senior Support person on Friday. Will ask for an explanation. Am still thinking its an OS Monterey programming issue. Maybe I'll get some information to share with everyone.
I had the same experience. I also live in the Apple ecosystem, so having to port everything over to Outlook (which has many of its own terrible issues) is not a good solution. I also loaded the account in Spark (another email client) and all of the messages appeared there, so it's clearly not a problem just at the account source.
Thanks for the update! I hope you do get some satisfaction from the higher level Apple folks, but not holding my breath. I can tell you fairly confidently that this email thing is not due to a performance issue with your Mac. I have had the identical mail problem on both my late 2013 Macbook Pro and my brand new 2022 Macbook Pro. Apple has a tendency to try to blame every problem a given user is experiencing on whatever they can find on that particular call. In terms of performance, there is definitely a possibility that that problem is caused by the computer, but I'd still be at least a little skeptical. At a certain point they do stop supporting particular older machines with the current OS.
Fingers crossed for that future update. I need those emails!
One more note on the iMac operations. The Apple representative suggested moving back from Monterey to Catalina. He said it's possible to go back. Others I've talked to said it won't work because all files are now in the Monterey OS. Think I'll tolerate the annoyances for a while before doing anything else. Anything else, at this point, means replacing the iMac with today's version of it. Thanks for your help
The changes are impacting everything Apple, both Mac and iOS are both impacted. Also the issue occurred without an update being applied to the desktop or phone OS so it has to be on the server side. I think it is something with iCloud and sync between devices that is issue. Let's hope someone fixes it
Mine is still broken too. I don’t think it has anything to do with macOS version as it is broken on multiple systems and iOS regardless of version. My guess is iCloud is propagating some restriction. What mail server are you using? Yahoo is my issue
Mine is on an AOL account. But I don't think it's totally unrelated to OS, because my old computer was fine on this issue. Then I updated its OS and it started having the issue, too. It seems to be on the last couple of OS's, but not on Catalina.
I have the exact same issue with AOL mail. I installed an apple update last week and now I'm limited to 10,000 emails on my Mac relative to the 113k total emails on AOL. I can only download new emails on Mac after getting below 10,000.
Was anyone able to fix this problem?
I was on the phone with Apple yet again about it today, and they seem relatively uninterested in trying to solve the issue. I escalated up the chain to a senior adviser a while back, and once they sent the problem to their technical support folks, they were told that it must be an AOL problem relating to their server settings and that I should contact AOL. So they're not actively doing anything to fix it. AOL, of course, charges for their support help, and certainly don't provide anyone high-level enough to understand server settings or get that kind of programming adjusted. So I'm not sure if/when this will ever get fixed. Apple seems to deny that it's their fault.
I told the representative that it seems HIGHLY unlikely to be an issue solvable by AOL, as the exact same thing happens on Yahoo. I also informed them that it's OS version-dependent, and that when it magically was fixed for a few weeks between 2/10 and 2/28, it seemed to be fixed for both AOL and Yahoo users at exactly the same time. So unless those two companies are psychic and mind-melded to fix the problem for a brief time at exactly the same juncture, it seems pretty clear that Apple is the one with the power to address it, and they simply aren't doing it.
Not sure what to do next. Or if there are any other avenues to make progress.
Thanks for your response. I have a follow up with Apple on Thursday and I'm going to mention that you're having the same issue. Perhaps if enough people bring it to their attention they fix it!
Have a good evening,
Rob
I was curious whether Spark was still curing this for you. For months, Spark was showing the full number of mails, but in the last day or so, it seems like Spark for Mac is now suffering from this problem, too. (At least for AOL). Did your Spark change as well?
Can you search the entire inbox without scrolling?
For me, Spark worked fine until the last day or so. It used to display all 50,000+ emails, but now stops at 10,000. You can actually see the total number if you enable the badge icon counter in the doc. Then instead of 999+, it will say the actual number. And you can set it to show either the unread or the total.
