Delete the email account from mail.
Login to AOL on the web and go to account settings then to account security.
Make sure you have 2-step verification enabled.
In AOL account security choose 'generate and manage app passwords'. Enter the name of the app as 'Apple Mail' and generate a one time password (I could only get this to work on Chrome so it might depend on browser settings). Copy this one time password.
Re-add the email account in mail but DO NOT select AOL account. Choose 'Other mail account'.
Use the one time password instead of your normal AOL password to login.
All your emails should now show in mail.
I switched to Spark and just keep Mac Mail as a search tool. Spark seems to show all emails beyond the last 10,000 in the inbox, but search facility is far from ideal as it misses about 70% of emails that the Mac Mail finds on keywords searched. Afaik Mac Mail holds emails on your drive where as Spark only accesses your email provider server (mine is Yahoo). So it's much faster, but also suggests Spark is not accessing all of my past emails.
It's annoying. Especially as nobody seems to want to own up to the change. I'm convinced now that it is not a Mac OS issue but an email provider issue that they simply don't want to acknowledge or reveal the details behind.
I was so excited for a solution to this, and immediately went and tried this once I saw it. It breaks my heart to say it didn't work at all for me. Back to 9,999 emails. Anyone else try this and fail? Any other workarounds? It's driving me crazy.
I tried it and am deeply saddened to say it didn't fix the issue for me. Wish I had something else to try, or could at least figure out why that worked for some so I could suggest further steps to Apple/AOL.
I have no idea about that.
thank you...
Are you also having issues on other devices for same account? My yahoo mail is imap on phone iPad and other macs and it is broken on all. I’m going to try removing from my Monterey ststems
Discussion with Yahoo was about how to find to the number of email messages on their system. My accounts work.
Didn't get an answer.
All my mail magically returned today with no action on my part. Really wonder what was going on.
Now I need to figure out if I should just keep my POP3 I set up as it worked when iMAP didn't. I'm glad you got your mail back too. Maybe use POP3 to 'back-up' mail locally.
2/3rds of email messages disappeared today....Yesterday they were available...now I'm back to 9,999 limit. Apple what's going on? This problem is nasty and unwanted.
One other thought, maybe it has to do with iCloud? The issue occurs on ALL my devices, Mac with Monterey, Catalina, and Big Sur. Also iPhone, iPad. All inbox are limited.
awesome! Thanks for the follow-up
I'm using Yahoo.mail via IMAP.
Same with my iPhone.
iCloud shouldn't be affecting my emails at all.
Same here. I think iCloud does some sort of sync with mail accounts.
I'm having the same issue on AOL.
