When will Photos automatically convert HEIC to JPEG when dropping on websites?

Apple changed the default compression in Photos to HEIC some time ago, which means if you try to upload photos to websites (e.g. Google Lens) they will usually be rejected.


Since HEIC is still a very uncommon format, why doesn't Photos automatically convert to JPEG when you drag-and-drop to another app?


At the moment you have to laboriously export photos as JPEG, creating another copy that you have to delete once you've uploaded it. It's a pretty bad user experience for such a common operation.
