Question re: changing my AppleID

What happens to purchases (songs, apps, etc.) made prior to changing to the AppleID? Does everything get reassigned to the renamed AppleID? Just as a point of reference, I would be following these directions here to change my AppleID: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202667.

A little more background:

My AppleID is a personal email address (e.g., myname@mydomain.com) that needs to be sunsetted. I would like to change it to an iCloud email address that I have not yet created (e.g., myname@icloud.com)

everything Would star the same except for the email you use for your Apple ID. You wouldn’t loose those purchases or music.

Yes... I saw that. But the guidance I'm getting from Apple is utterly confusing and causes real doubt that this is a smooth process. For example, I was advised that before I do anything in the support article noted above, I need to go into my iPhone first, and go into Settings > Mail > Accounts > Add Account > (select iCloud) and create a new account. It is really circular or conflicting by creating a duplicate account and seems like it would be super easy to thoroughly screw up my Apple ID and access to existing purchases.
