i pod classic - deleting podcasts

I have an old I pod classic on which i have music and podcasts. Podcasts cannot be synced etc using i tunes with this ipod now that podcats and i tunes are split apps. - i have to use Finder on my computer. Easy to add podcasts but there is no option to delete as there used to be when i could do it all on i tunes

so far the answers on here and elswhere do not match an i pod classic! Thanks

If you change your sync selections then deselected content ought to be removed on the next sync. Is that not happening for you? Failing that connect the device and look at it with Finder. There should be a manage storage button somewhere which allows you to locate content to remove.

Here I've connected my classic to a machine running Monterey:

See the Manage Storage button top right? Admittedly it didn't show for me until I selected Manually manage... which I wasn't sure was entirely safe to do since I've previously synced this with a different computer. But I'm all for testing things, so I did it, and then disconnected the iPod since I've read elsewhere that was a thing that can preserve the existing data. I could always reload from the other machine if it hadn't worked out, so I'm not necessarily endorsing this manoeuvre unless you also have access to all your content somewhere. As it was there were no podcasts on this iPod so the next thing I did was sync some to it. Again I got a warning about removing all existing content, which I cancelled, but I was still allowed to choose some podcasts to sync, which I did.

Clicking the Manage Storage button, and then Podcasts, shows the episodes that I synced, and would allow me to delete them.

While I can find a way to manually remove existing podcasts from a classic I cannot see a way to add them, nor a way to add locally stored podcast episodes into the Podcasts app's library.

See Recover media from an iPod - Apple Community to reclaim all of your media that is on the classic and nowhere else such that you can afford to switch over to automatic syncing. Failing that you may at least be able to switch to syncing podcasts provided you're prepared to replace all podcasts on the device with a new selection from the computer.

Ok ill have to read that a few times and think about it!

I can add podcasts no problem - i subscribe to podcasts on the apple podcast app and manually choose them to download THEN move to finder to sync the i pod classics. Hence it is FULL of podcasts . there used to be an option to 'delete all played episodes' which i can no longer find. All my music is synced on the mac so i dont want to risk losing that. Podcasts are easy to replace!

Thank you. I’ve followed your instructions. I had so many podcasts…all 132 GB of them as it wasn’t removing played ones and on the manage manually there just isn’t a way to identify what has been played or not that I’ve had to delete them all and go through my podcasts on the Apple podcasts app and thin down what I subscribe to. I’ve then gone back to Finder and unticked all those podcasts and then clicked Apply then let it sync afresh choosing the ‘all unplayed’ option. It’s whirling away syncing now but it will take ages and I may have to leave it running. Hopefully I will still get all the episodes of things I was listening to like serials! However if you or anyone discover a ‘remove played episodes tab’please let me know. I’ll let you know if it has worked later. Thanks again.
