Google threatens cutoff of gmail access on 5/30/2022

Google has been complaining about my use of gmail with the Mac mail app for years because, apparently, it doesn't use (or I don't know how to use) google's two factor authentication. Today I received an email from google notifying me that...

"To help keep your account secure, Google will no longer support the use of third-party apps or devices which ask you to sign in to your Google Account using only your username and password. Instead, you’ll need to sign in using "Sign in with Google" or other more secure technologies, like OAuth 2.0. "

I love the Mac mail app and use it happily with gmail as my email provider. Is there a way that I can continue using the Mac's mail app and be able live with google's requirements? It would be a major PIA to switch to some other email vendor. Everything depends on my email address! I also find that the web based client for gmail is a lot less than useful.

I am using the current MacOS Montery 12.2.1 on a Macbook Air M1.

I received the email and saw in another thread to do this:

  1. Delete your Google Account in your device's settings (Mail Preferences - Accounts on iMac or Settings - Mail on iPhone/iPad)
  2. Add Account and select Google
  3. You'll then be prompted as "muguy" mentioned above to Open Browser and you'll need to sign into your Google account.
  4. You may get a message from Google with a code (that only happened on my iPhone)
  5. Save

IMAP keeps the emails on the server until you open them. What is downloaded when you establish the account is just a relatively small small descriptor for each email. Your alternative doesn't seem very good, having your gmail account cut off. If O were in your shoes I would get an external thumb drive and off load your larger files.

I've got back to gmail in Mac Mail with Sierra, but my wife's old Macbook can't do it with Mavericks. I checked at with a Mavericks partition on my newer Mac, and it couldn't change to get gmail now.

Is Mavericks Mail too old to authenticate as Google wants it now? Would upgrading to Yosemite be enough (thats as far as the Macbook can go)?

You can always access GMAIL via a web browser. There is no need to use Apple Mail if your operating systems are that old and the interface does not work well anymore.

Today, a few Gmail addresses stopped working in Mail. They have asked that I log in through a browser on the Google mail site. I In Thunderbird, both of my (business website) dot com email addresses were set to use Google as a server (rather than my shared server specific information for my website). My iPhone is going off. I'll bet that is registering Gmail issues as well. Several months ago, Google required me to sign in to Google mail through Safari. They make it look like there is a security issue. I assumed someone had tried to log in to my accounts (gmail used for public matters, retail purchases, etc). I complied only because I thought I would lose access to my mail accounts. Google then repopulated my desktop Mail application with new mailboxes for each email, distinguished from the prior Mail account listings by the Google icon. Since then, I have had (1) junk mail show up in Mail for the first time, ever; (2) junk mail show up with regular mail in my inbox; (3) mail from established contacts appear in junk mail, etc. How is Gmail making my correspondence more secure??
