iPhone X battery swelling and screen lift

my iPhone X is 4 years old - originally cost $2,000.00+

a few weeks ago a bright green line of light appears on the screen- “the green line of death” apparently and the phone was extremely hot

I took off my phone cover and saw the battery had swollen up, lifting the screen off and bulging the phone case.

I spoke with Apple support- they said it was a safety issue > created a case number and told me to take it physically to an Apple agent for repair. I was told due to the possibility of it bursting into fire I couldn’t courier or post it.

We live 250km from the nearest Apple repairers.

Yesterday I took it to Ubertec (Apple repairer)

Took a look at it and Quotes me $690.00 to repair it?? - I declined!

I have seen this battery issue a number times on various forums- Apple seems to ignore it, hoping it will go away.

My question is, how do we get this to someone in Apple that will acknowledge the fault and offer a solution?

I have been an Apple fan boy for well over 35 years, macs laptops and phones and this flick off is more than a little disappointing

Unfortunately batteries can swell. It's not necessarily an issue of quality of the battery or the charging system. It's just something that happens randomly. I've had it happen with my old MacBook, but due to the design, it didn't damage anything internally but just bulged out the bottom. Apple actually offered a service replacement cheaper than a retail replacement battery.

There are ways to reduce the chances, but for one reason or another they're not available in most compact portable devices. Stuff like active cooling via fans and/or radiators. And most are packaged in thin membranes. This isn't an Apple or Samsung issue. It's not Simplo or Dynapak. It just something that happens occasionally with this particular technology.

I don't know how rare it is, but it's something that happens to some extent with pretty much any lithium-ion batteries from any supplier and used by any electronic product. Apple doesn't have any access to super special battery technology. They have specifications and buy from large battery manufacturers like Dynapak, Simplo, and Samsung-SDI. Other manufacturers have similar problems and treat them the same as Apple. If swelling happens within the warranty or extended warranty (AppleCare) period then it's a covered defect, including any additional damage to the rest of the device.

But that's what warranties are for. Warranties aren't necessarily guarantees that a device won't fail, but rather liabilities borne by the manufacturer or seller for a specific time for any failures. Once the warranty period has expired, they don't pay for repairs. They obviously have an incentive to not have to pay for warranty repairs. and there isn't some magic switch turned on to allow for a higher rate of failures once it's out of warranty.

Again - this isn't unique to Apple devices.

Hi, I appreciate your comments - But I still have a $2,000.00 product that through no fault of my own, no longer is usable.

I have seen, on other sites, that the response from Apple has been along the line that it is "rare".

If the issue is so random and rare, surely a company like Apple should stand behind their product.

I will probably have to find a social media platform to air the issue and find out just how "rare" it is and how Apple have dealt with it. I would rather not waste the time, but something is just not right with this.
