Failed to update macOS 12.3

MacBook Pro 14 2021, I upgraded the macOS 12.3 that was just released this morning. After clicking Restart Now, the progress bar started to read. It restarted with a black screen in less than half (normally it should show how many minutes are left), and then flashed twice in white. Apple logo, and then restarted to enter the update progress bar (for more than ten minutes). After entering the system, I found that the macOS 12.2.1 version before installation was returned, and an error pop-up window was reported: Unexpected restart. The error report has only one line of code:

SOCD report detected: (iBoot panic)

There was also a problem with the installation when the beta version was released before. I tried three times, the first update failed and I returned to macOS 12.1. The second update failed, and the white Apple logo flashed repeatedly at startup. The third update failed. Black screen.

I have tried booting in safe mode, creating a new administrator, and downloading the full macOS installation package, but none of them work.

Anybody has the same problem? How can I troubleshoot the problem?

Was able to connect with Apple Support. Was told on Saturday (apologies for the delay in posting) that Apple engineering is aware of this issue and are working on a fix. It does seem to be related to those of us that have had logic boards replaced. No ETA on a fix, but I was told I would get a call/email letting me know a fix was available. My support contact said he believed it would come in the form of a new software update, perhaps 12.3.1 or a patch to 12.3, but the issue would be called out in release notes. It appears a fix is on the way.

Hope this is helpful.

Here's a "me too!", but also a request:

There was mention of threads of reddit and other forums. Could we get links to some of those? It would spare us even more tedious web searching (I didn't see any of those, but found this one), and possibility of missing the important ones. It would be great to be able also to track/follow those other threads for progress.

logic board replacement in January

12.3 update repeatedly fails with "iBoot panic" restart

Mar 17, 2022 10:15 AM in response to fyime

I've tried three times to upgrade to 12.3 from MBP 2019. As I read comments here about logic board replacements, it occurs to me that the whole topboard (not sure that's the exact term) was replaced due to a faulty keyboard. Does anyone know if the logic board would have been replaced as part of that? I'm guessing it was.

Let's see how quickly apple fixes this.

I can't upgrade to MacOS 12/3 on my MBP 14" 2021. I had the logic board replaced in Feb due to coffee spill. On Tuesday when 12.3 came update tried to update but fit doesn't finish the upgrade after the Mac installs 12.3, it stays on current version. Then hit software upgrade button again, and it will brick it (black screen with exclamation mark and reference that you need to restore). Did the Apple Configurator 2 thing to revive or restore, but does not work. Brought it to the Apple Store and they again replaced logic board with versions 12.01 on it. I went home to upgrade to latest OS as instructed by the Genius from Apple store. However, I am at the same point that after it does the install it does not finish but stay on 12.01. I will not do it again as it will brick my MBP again. The Apple Genuis people clearly don't understand the problem.

That's frustrating - but exactly what I expected for the first few people going in. At this point your best bet is probably to do the update again and see if it bricks then go back and ask for replacement machine given Apple haven't even acknowledged the problem yet. You can point out the press reports on MacRumors and 9to5Mac about the issue. As the machine is 5 months old maximum, they should be able to arrange it. Or just stay on 12.2.1 for a while and hope they announce something soon.

Hello!

After the issue happened, I went to Apple store and they replaced a MLB for me.

But when I got it back, I still tried to upgrade (Cuz I didn’t realize the error was caused by the 12.3 at that time). It showed iBoot panic again after it failed.

Can I ask that will the error of iBoot panic damages my hardware permanently if I don’t upgrade one more time?

I really worried about it🙉🙉🙉

I'm in the same situation. Sending it to Genius Bar will not resolve the issue, I believe now the only thing that users could do is to wait until Apple release a new version that is able to install on those Macs that have this issue. I don't think the this will damage the hardware, in fact, this only happens if I try to install macOS 12.3, if I use Apple Configurator 2, I am able to install all previous versions of macOS, but not 12.3. Just don't do updates anymore and wait, cause some people reported that system won't boot after updates and require a restore, and in this case you basically have to erase it so all data is gone.

Thank you!

Yes, in the beginning, I tried two times to upgrade on my Macbook (my MLB has been replaced once because of liquid damage), then I could not boot it anymore, only flashing logo and exclamation point showed on the screen. I went to Apple store, they told me they could not restore it, and the only way to solve it was to replace MLB at no cost (Because they including me thought the error was caused by pervious repair). I hope there is no a permanent hardware damage and let's just wait for apple to solve it!

To be honest, this is frustrating because after a few weeks of waiting for my MacBook to be repaired I had to spent a few hours on trying to update it in vain.

After several attempts to update MacOS I stopped. When I have found this thread I realized I am not alone here. But now I still have Monterey 12.0.1 and it is so buggy that I am considering going to Apple to have my MacBook updated to any previous macOS version.

Initially, I was so happy to have my MacBook back because I also have iPad and wanted to use Universal Control but now I cannot even add my google mail accounts because of some 12.0.1 bag :-/

For a computer costing 3500 usd this is strange.

I have a MacBook Pro M1 Max and the same problem.

To cut to the chase, the quality and support is unacceptable.

My MacBook quit after about 1 1/2 months. The repair took a whole month, including replacing the LogicBoard twice (first replacement part defective). After I received the device back, the actual error (display failure) occurred again after 2 hours.

After that, Apple took an entire month to initiate the second repair (even though I am an Apple Care Plus customer).

After a total of 3 months I received my device back and now stumble as first about this update... Apple Support is informed, but they don't even get back to me anymore.

At a price of 5100 EUR, I would have expected something more. Would love to throw the device out the window, to where the money has gone.

It's been more than 1 week now, does this problem solved?

I got my MacBook Pro 16" coffee spilled 2 weeks ago and have everything (logic board, screen, Touch ID) replaced, the system version is 12.0.1.

First update to 12.3 failed but no "iBoot panic" error message. Attempts follow are also failed due to Network connection, then I found the "bricking" issue.

The 12.3 update is hanging there and I would appreciate if any updates to solve this issue, even Public Beta would do!
