Midi stopped working with iOS 15.4

Is anyone else having any issues with midi programs not working via camera connection kits to their music workstations via usb connected to the keyboard? My Yamaha M08 worked perfectly until iOS 15.4. All of my midi apps freeze, then crash with this update.

iPad, iPadOS 15

This is weird. All my devices with 15.4.1 stoped working after update. Now I’m using a din cable and it works back on all devices.

These are the possibilities I tried here.

Cable

USB-B to USB-A with Lighting Camera Adapter or USB-B to Lightning (Agvee)

Devices

iPhone 13, iPhone 8 or iPad Air 2

iOS 15.3.1 work.

After iOS 15.4 don’t work.

Cable

USB-B to USB-A with USB-C Camera Adapter or USB-B to USB-C (Ugreen)

Device

iPad Air 4

iOS 15.3.1 works

After iOS 15.4 doesn't work.

MIDI DIN to USB-A with USB-C Camera Adapter or lightning Camera Adapter

All devices are working. Tried on iPhone 8, 12, iPad Air 2, 3 and 4. All with 15.4.1.

I'm using a DOREMiDi Brand cable. This is the only way I found to use SimplyPiano for while, at least, until Apple fix this problem.

I have important news to report. I was able to get the iPad to see the MoXf again. After the update suddenly I believe my midi adapter the Yamaha UX96 went unresponsive. I replaced it with an IRIG2 and suddenly the iPad sees the Moxf again. I hope this helps everyone. I can't tell you how much pain I went through the last 24 hours trying to get it to work. I found out that other Yamaha Moxf owners still had a working midi connection after the update which made me take a second look and start replacing parts just in case.

I have just spoken to an Apple rep who was trying to help me. Apparently iOS 15.5 is now out and they have fixed a kernel error that was causing a problem. The power just went out at our place so I can’t force the update at the moment, but I’ve heard from others that it resolved their issue so I am going to install the update and see if it resolves the with my iPad Pro not recognizing my midi device.

This happened to me too, but I think I managed to find a (temporary?) solution (sorry if this posted already). TLDR: it seems to be working again once I switched to Apple's original Apple Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter (link to Amazon).

My setup is a Casio keyboard, the latest iPad (2021) and SimplyPiano. I was using this (link to Amazon) USB + charger splitter/adapter, and it worked great with both charing and the USB cable for midi from my keyboard. Yet, post iPadOs upgrade the USB part stopped working, still charging well. I then tried a few different USB to Lightning adapters, but none worked. As a last resort I tried purchasing the original Apple one. And voila, that one is working. For now.

In the meanwhile, I found out that it is somehow related with the connected USB devices. I use a rather old Yamaha P-250 Stage Piano via USB. With this, none of the apps that try to scan for Midi devices, work anymore. If I use the iRig Midi interface and connect the Piano via DIN midi cable, everything works fine. With a new Midi Keyboard (Nektar GX 61), I still can use the direct USB connection. The problem might be related with older Midi standards.

I contacted Apple tech support which recommended reinstalling iPadOS from the macbook, I did it, but the problem persists. It is clear now the problem is in the operating system, because I have and old iPad that does not have the latest iPadOS and MIDI apps works fine with the same keyboard.

I also use a M-audio audio interface that works fine with the new iPad, so the problem is not related to USB, this problem seems to affect just MIDI.

The iRig2 is what I'm using as a workaround... The box comes with the device and 3 cables, one usb, one lightning, and I can't remember the third. I has to purchase the 5 pin midi cables separately. I connected both midi in and midi out with 5 pin cables to the iRig box, then the other end of the box I use the 8 pin to lightning cable straight to my ipad lightning port. there is no power applied to the iRig device and the camera kit only has one lightning connector so the ipad will not be charging while you're playing. That's fine for the short sessions I play, but will be impractical for long sets of an hour or more. I would rather Apple fix the bug and put things back the way they were when everything worked with the camera connection kit via usb to lightning.

I updated to 15.5 and the issue remains. None of my midi apps work, even Garage Band. I think the issue lies within midi core and usb devices. If you use the iRig Midi 2 with the lightning cable connected to the ipad and 5 pin midi cables connected to the keyboard, everything works fine. I wonder if they disabled anything associated with usb?

Hi All!

I reached out to Simplypiano support for assistance, looks like Apple has made it more difficult to use third party cables.

They suggested to get the camera adapter and will extend my subscription once it’s working with all months lost :)

Thanks for getting back. Though it is possible that third-party adapters work, this error you screenshotted means that your device won't support it, which is common and why we highly recommend using the authentic adapters. It is quite common that a third-party adapter is used for some time and then all of a sudden, this error pops up.

Also, there are some reports that with iOS 15.6, Apple is even pickier about the setups. If you use an authentic Apple adapter, you shouldn't have any issues.

I was using a camera connection kit with via the lightning adapter into the usb connection on the back of my Yamaha Mo8... I never used the midi ports on the back of the keyboard, since I could connect via the usb, to the camera connection kit, into the lightning port on my Ipad. That was up until they released iOS version 15.4.. My midi connection was completely lost after that. I too, ended up purchasing an iRig Midi 2 kit and got it to work, using the midi cables. My original setup with the camera connection kit was working flawlessly up until iOS 15.4 .... I don't understand why Apple decided to just shut off Midi 1 capable devices that were working just fine using camera connection kits. At the very least, they should have told the Apple faithful via news release or tech release. Or if they did, I never saw it.

I am very pessimistic that Apple will fix it and and instead blame the problem on older equipment.. Hopefully someone at Yamaha will talk to Apple. Hopefully someone can chime in on a successful USB based product that works.... I am just greatful that the IRIG midi2 fixed my issues. I was tearing my hair out in frustration until someone in a yamaha Moxf Facebook user group identified that as a potential solution because they were unaffected by the update with the same equipment as me. You should try to communicate with other users of the piano you own on Facebook. Remember you are not alone!

I upgraded to 15.6 iOS this week and I’m very excited to say that the USB connection to my Yamaha Clavinova now works!! I am using a USB to “C” connection to my iPad. I believe after installing 15.6, I restarted my iPad even though that was part of the installation process and that is when it started working. Finally after months of having no direct connection I’ve got it back!

This past Saturday, I was able to download version 15.6. I installed it and the next morning, I connected my keyboard to to my original cck setup and it was still not working. This evening, I rebooted the ipad from a cold boot and reconnected the cck to the ipad and my keyboard and I am happy to report that my setup is now working again!!

Thank you to all who responded and sent feedback to Apple Support. Collectively we were able to show them there was an issue and it appears they listened and corrected the bugs! Thanks to all of you for getting Apple to see the problems and thanks to Apple for listening and fixing the issues!

Also I forgot to add. Simply Piano gave me a 3 month extension because of this issue and thanked me yo contacting apple. It’s sad that Simply Piano had to take the hit when it was an apple issue but I will stay with Simply Piano for a few more years because of how nice they are.

also the Apple developer rep said that our contacting apple helped get this fix into 15.6

Well done all
