Midi stopped working with iOS 15.4

I am very pessimistic that Apple will fix it and and instead blame the problem on older equipment.. Hopefully someone at Yamaha will talk to Apple. Hopefully someone can chime in on a successful USB based product that works.... I am just greatful that the IRIG midi2 fixed my issues. I was tearing my hair out in frustration until someone in a yamaha Moxf Facebook user group identified that as a potential solution because they were unaffected by the update with the same equipment as me. You should try to communicate with other users of the piano you own on Facebook. Remember you are not alone!

A lot of app allow users to manage different midi keyboard with iPad for example Camelot Pro, cubasis, Sampletank etc. Irig midi Is a workaround but not the solution. Also if u have a soundcard with standard midi the result Is the same of using irig.

So I started doing inventory on the boards that I play. My travel board Yamaha Mx61 doesn’t work. I’ll get the IRig for that situation. My Yamaha P115 does along with a M Audio midi controller(it’s older). I have to check a Casio Privia on Saturday to see if it works. But based on what I’ve seen keyboards released 2015 or later are not affected and the one before 2015 are affect which is weird because Midi 2.0 didn’t come out until 2020. Hope this info helps

My iPad Pro 13 4th gen stopped recognizing my Yamaha Clavinova with the last iOS update. This is not a cheap midi device and everything was working perfectly until the last update. The midi apps work fine. After investigating what I have discovered is that the midi device is not being recognized. If I unplug the midi device the app works fine. When I started up midi wrench it looked like it was going to hang so I unplugged the midi and plugged it back in and the app started up. I could see the name “Yamaha Clavinova”, but it was not highlighted and I couldn’t do anything with it.

I have this problem also. Yamaha DSG640 worked great with SimplePiano on my iPad Pro as recently as two weeks ago. Sat down today to play and it just crashes/hangs. So does GarageBand, and midiwrench. If I unplug the USBA the apps work.I have usb from key board to USB A to C dongle.

I have the same issue with Yamaha Clavinova CLP 230. Worked fine on my iPad PRO in Garageband until it got updated to iOS 15.4.

It still works fine on my other iPad PRO which is still with iOS 14.0.1.

I am having this problem with my classroom keyboards (not high end, I know). I am using Yamaha PSR 293 and connect them to iPads using USB-B to lightning. I have been using this with a piano app (Scoove) so my students can work independently and each at their own pace. The iPads that automatically updated to 15.4.1 no longer can be used because the iPad no longer connects via midi. But, the iPads that had not updated still work. I have one newer PSR-E373 that does work with the update. this supports someone else's post that it might be the older midi causing the compatibility problem. Unfortunately, there is no way my school district is going to buy me 10 new keyboards; this is really impacting my curriculum. If anyone discovers some kind of adapter that helps connect the new update to the older midi device, please post!

If you have standard midi ports you can use the 5pin midi cables. I got an IRig midi for mine because the boards that wasn’t affected by usb wasn’t able to use Ravenscroft275. Yeah apple dropped the ball. The other solution is you can try to have the iPads downgraded back to 15.3. Apple will not do this for you.

Thanks for your reply. I would gladly downgrade to 15.3 if I could figure out how to do it. I haven't had much success finding a "how to" for that online. If you are anyone reading this could steer me towards how to do that, this would be amazing! Unfortunately, none of my keyboards have a 5 pin midi, only the USB-B.

For my Yamaha DGX-630 piano I ended up purchasing the Yamaha UD-BT01 Wireless Bluetooth MIDI Adaptor. Bluetooth may not be a solution for everyone but it worked for my situation so may be helpful for a few people.

Yes, the package comes with the USB-A to USB-B cable and the USB to Bluetooth adaptor. On one side of the adaptor is a standard USB-A plug which needs to be pushed in to a standard USB 5v wall charger, then on the other side is a USB-A socket which the included cable plugs into.

I always play with iPad Garage Band, Usb controllers and audio interface. Today i noticed that iOS doesn’t support MIDI and USB interface anymore. Apple, please, i worked well with you hardwares and softwares, as well as i spent much money to buy correct hardwares. This is a very bad joke…

just stopped working for me today. Was playing on my Yamaha-125W, went for a break, came back, plugged in my iphone 12 pro and got “device is not supported”. I’ve been using SimplyPiano for 6 months without issues. Today just stopped working without any changes.

Yeah, its a third party brand USB-B to lightning that has been working fine for 6 months. Out of the blue in between piano sessions it stopped being recognized and after replugging it a couple times the unsupported message popped up.
