Hi bsled,

Thanks for coming to Apple Support Communities for help today.

If Face ID is working elsewhere correctly, it may just not be switched on for App Store purchases. Please see: Use Face ID on your iPhone or iPad Pro.

"To use Face ID to purchase content from the iTunes Store, App Store, and Book Store, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and make sure that iTunes & App Store is turned on. Then follow these steps:

  1. Open the iTunes Store, App Store, or Book Store, then tap something that you want to buy.
  2. When asked to pay, double-click the side button, then glance at your iPhone or iPad. If you're wearing a face mask that covers your mouth and nose but Face ID with a mask isn't set up, tap Pay with Passcode and enter your passcode instead.
  3. Wait for Done and a checkmark to display

You might be asked to enter your Apple ID password for the first purchase you make in the iTunes Store, App Store, or Book Store."

Have a fantastic day!

Mine currently won’t work either. It will not even time out or anything, it just continues to try and read my face. Trying to figure out any other options besides just commenting on here, and everyone says that it works right after you comment on here. Please provide other options.

*update* Instead of commenting on here and hoping for the best, do yourself a favor and just go to your settings and go to your Face ID and turn them all off and back on. It worked after that for me.

I think commenting on this thread does legitimately work. Although mine resolved before I ACTUALLY commented. It seems like what triggers it is when you sign in with your Apple ID here online (getting ready to comment). Then it sent me a notification saying someone was signing in (on my phone that was frozen on Face ID), I had to enter the verification code, and then that seemed to somehow trigger me to enter the password on my phone. As if logging in elsewhere made the device want to re-verify me or something. Not really sure - what a weird glitch, but thank goodness for you people here on this forum!

By the way - Face ID still was blinking and blocking my entry of my password once that field appeared. Tapping the center of the blinking Face ID logo will make it go away (only do that once it presents you with the password field).
