Finder doesn't show a numbers file

Julie from Rochester asked this question almost a decade ago and no one answered it.

I'm on MacOS Monterey Version 12.2.1

steps -

  1. create a document in Numbers, save it with a file name to a specific folder
  2. optionally add some information to the document and save again
  3. close the document
  4. in Finder, navigate back to the folder where you saved the document, it does not appear- other documents do appear
  5. open Numbers, and you can find the file in the folder (for example by navigating to it or use find recent in numbers)

My Mac is already set to display invisible files. I did try command shift period anyway but it isn't a hidden file. The file name is <filename>.numbers.

From the Numbers search , I find the file and click to show in Finder. The file shows in the location where I saved it.

I closed all my finder windows and opened them again but it still doesn't show.

I believe this issue has always existed with Numbers documents. I always have to open them from Numbers and I don't think they show in Finder.

Are you sure it is only Numbers files doing this? It sounds like a problem with Finder. Someone with this problem (not about Numbers) in 2008 posted that they were viewing files in icon view in Finder and they found when they adjusted the grid size the files suddenly appeared.

Here is a thread I found that was trying some other ideas:

Recent saved files do not show up in Find… - Apple Community

The "recents" they are talking about in that thread is the recents "folder" in the finder sidebar, not in the Numbers app. If recents is not in the sidebar, you can turn it on in Finder/Preferences.

Interesting, My folder was created yesterday. All the files were created yesterday. There are three files- a .numbers, a .pdf and a .png.

The default item grouping is None- the numbers files doesn't show.

same item grouping and switch the view from icons, to list to columns and to "icons, in a list , in columns or in a gallery

the numbers file doesn't show

I changed the item grouping to Date Last Opened

The numbers file doesn't show

change the default item grouping

Now the view is split into Yesterday and earlier

the .numbers file does not appear

All I did was select the folder ending in 21 - which has three files created yesterday and the numbers file does display but not the other two files

There are some conditions where the .numbers file appears but mostly it does not. Doubtless someone has an explanation but it is not intuitive.

Do you have two folders named T____21 in the left column? With the blacked out stuff I can't tell if they have the same name or not. If they do, I suspect they are two different folders. From what I can see, it looks like one may have a space in it that the other does not. If they are two different folders that would explain why some things are in one and not the other.
