When I try to call from my iPhone to an iPad at home I get FaceTime unavailable

My iPhone and all of our iPads use the same Apple ID. When someone calls on FaceTime all devices ring. This still works. However, we were always able to call between the iPhone and the iPad on FaceTime. Now when we try, we get “FaceTime Unavailable.” Why does FaceTime work with others, but it no longer works between our devices?

Hi CIGNON,

Since you're having trouble making/receiving FaceTime calls on your iPad, try these steps:

  1. "Make sure that your device has a Wi-Fi connection to the Internet or a cellular-data connection.
  2. Learn more if you're using router, firewall, or security software that restricts Internet access.
  3. If you're trying to use FaceTime over cellular, make sure that Use Cellular Data is on for FaceTime. Go to Settings and tap Cellular or tap Mobile Data, then turn on FaceTime. If you're using an iPad, you might see Settings > Cellular Data.
  4. Go to Settings > FaceTime and make sure that FaceTime is on.
    • If you see "Waiting for Activation," turn FaceTime off and then on again. Learn what to do if you can't activate FaceTime.
    • If you don't see the FaceTime setting, make sure that Camera and FaceTime aren't off in Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps.
    • Make sure that you have the correct phone number or email address listed.

5. Go to Settings > General > Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.

6. Restart your device.

7. Update your device to the latest version of iOS."

More information can be found here: If you can't make a FaceTime call on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

We also suggest checking your settings on your devices. Go to Settings > FaceTime > Send & Receive, and verify that your iPad is able to accept calls at the preferred contact method.

If these devices are for different members of the family, we suggest using different accounts. Family Sharing is a great way to still be able to share purchases, but keep your information separate.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the response and the help. Everything you say is correct. In the meantime, I have also discovered that you need to have different emails or phone numbers on the different devices so that facetime can distinguish them. They need to be added to the Apple ID info. Then each device should have a separate email where it can be reached on FaceTime. That way, you can make FaceTime calls among the devices even though they all share the same Apple ID.
