iPad Air 5 poor battery life

iPad Air 5 battery is draining fast. After watching Netflix, about 2 and a half hours, my battery was already down to 40% from a charge of 100%. I have noticed that the life of the battery did not seem to match my last iPad Air 3 since I received it. Is this OS related?

iPad Air, iPadOS 15

Hello Hadrielsfury,

For difficulties with your battery life, you'll want to take the following steps:

  1. Update to the latest software, including your apps
  2. Optimize your settings
  3. Enable Low Power Mode
  4. View Battery Usage information

This resource has more details on each of those steps: Batteries - Maximizing Performance

Should you continue to face difficulties with your battery life after taking those steps, you'll want to reach out to Apple Support so they can look into this further: Contact Apple Support

Take care.

i had the same issue with a new iPad Air.

took it in to apple and they ran testing and said no issues came up with batter.

battery health is 100.

I lose about 20% of battery per hour.

I get 5 hours Max on a full charge with full brightness.

I feel like we’ve all been scammed.

I traded in an iPad Pro gen 3 for this newer smaller iPad.

at the store the apple employee looked up battery life between my old iPad and new iPad Air and it clearly states 10 hrs of bagger life on video playback or safari browsing.

I had them restore it. Started from scratch. Same thing.

took it in. They replaced it.

guess what. My replacement is no different. 20% use per hour.

updated to most recent iOS.

I have ZERO notifications on iPad.

I have Background app refresh turned off.

this is utterly disappointing and unacceptable…

wish I had good news… believe me.

The only things I've found helpful for extending battery life in my m1 air iPad gen 5 was to leave the "cell data" option off unless i needed it and to use the "low battery mode" option on as well. I was able to test the gen 5 side by side with a 2020 Apple iPad Air 4th Gen (10.9 inch, Wi-Fi + Cellular, 256GB) and found the battery life in both to be about the same as long as i utilized the cell data option and lo battery option similarly in both. It isn't ideal but I did want to have the faster one and i'm working with what works for me. Just for group info.

For benefit of all who find this thread, the following information may be helpful.

If your iPad has been purchased directly from Apple, you have 14-days within which you can unconditionally return an item for repair or exchange. If having any difficulties, you would be well advised to make use of the opportunity while it remains available.

Upon expiry of 14-days, the opportunity to exchange the iPad has been lost - after which the device will be assessed under the terms of the limited one-year warranty. If the iPad is assessed by Apple as defective, Apple reserve the right to offer a reconditioned iPad of the same model and specification in lieu of repair.

My iPad Air 5 is less than a week old. In roughly an hour's use this morning, battery life has dropped from 100% to 65%. Plus, the device is quite warm. Battery life on my iPad Air 3 is far better without the heat. And most of what I wasn't doing wasn't processor intensive (mostly editing contacts), but that shouldn't really matter on a new, state of the art device.

My relatively new Ipad air 5th gen (purchased a month ago) all of a sudden starts having fast battery drain issues. After trying all the tips, I noticed when looking at the battery usage, there isn’t any particular app that ends up using 98% of the battery. Its random and this is when the ipad is just left unattended. I tried a complete factory reset. Not installing any apps after the reset and its still draining super fast - 50% of battery in a 4 hours while un attended/used. I suspect the internal sleep mode is not activating, any way to check?

I would return it before you run out of time. I called in just after the return allotment time and got nowhere. Well actually, they offered me $225 trade in to go to the pro and I had just paid $949 Canadian. Nice of them. What an insult. I have been buying Apple since the 80s and have multiple products of theirs and this is the real first time I called in a favour. Even Apple now has lost its ability to reason or understand that I needed an exception. Oh well… next Apple product I buy will be passionless, sad for a company that built its empire on passion and vision. I think the term now is “whatever…”.

I spoke with Apple on the phone yesterday. The tech tried to approve an exchange for a new one but their system wouldn’t allow it because the three battery tests indicate the battery is good. She sought supervisory approval but the supervisor couldn’t do it either. The only thing they could do was to make me an appointment with a genius (again) for a battery replacement. I politely pointed out that the solution doesn’t make sense. Why replace the battery when the tests say it’s not the problem? The only response I got was that the genius might find something else wrong. IMHO it seems to be a hardware issue that has something to do with the screen. The ipad only eats up battery life when the screen is on (I only use it to read books off line). It doesn’t get hot when I charge it, even overnight. I have erased it twice and set it up as a new one rather than using a backup. I have updated the software, turned off everything in the background, etc. and nothing changed. The last time (based on the recommendation of the Apple tech) I even tried erasing it with my mac, no change. Four hours of book reading is ridiculous battery life and the thing gets so hot it isn’t comfortable to hold. I have Applecare+ and don’t feel like it was worth the expense let alone the cost of the device… We’ll see what the genius has to say.

My IPad Air 5th Gen has the worst battery I've ever had in an Ipad. I've had 3 IPads in my life, 4 with the Air 5th Gen I just purchased and I've experienced very very bad battery life and overheating while using it without it being charging. They really need to fix this issue. I am coming from using an IPad 7th Gen and it had a wonderfu battery that would last days even with me using it all day. With the IPad Air 5th Gen I have to charge it around 3 times a day since I use it all day to work. Right now I was writing some notes and it lost 2% battery in 10 minutes while I was only using GoodNotes.

My IPad Air 5th Gen is NEW and it should not be having these battery issues.
