iPad Air 5 poor battery life

iPad Air 5 battery is draining fast. After watching Netflix, about 2 and a half hours, my battery was already down to 40% from a charge of 100%. I have noticed that the life of the battery did not seem to match my last iPad Air 3 since I received it. Is this OS related?

My iPad Air 5 is less than a week old. In roughly an hour's use this morning, battery life has dropped from 100% to 65%. Plus, the device is quite warm. Battery life on my iPad Air 3 is far better without the heat. And most of what I wasn't doing wasn't processor intensive (mostly editing contacts), but that shouldn't really matter on a new, state of the art device.

Same here. Felt like I was going insane! The support person ran a remote diagnostic and declared the battery health is fine.

But, as I explained to them, I was so fed up with the battery draining that I charged to 100% and manually powered off the iPad...after month or so, I turn it on and the battery is 30%!!!

But iPad Air 5 does not record this data with timestamps - so it is hard to prove this happens.

In countries where Apple sells the products at even more inflated rates, you really do feel ripped off. In this region - for instance - the exchange rate's around 80. But Apple multiples USD rates by 100. (They manufacture devices in the region!!!)

The only things I've found helpful for extending battery life in my m1 air iPad gen 5 was to leave the "cell data" option off unless i needed it and to use the "low battery mode" option on as well. I was able to test the gen 5 side by side with a 2020 Apple iPad Air 4th Gen (10.9 inch, Wi-Fi + Cellular, 256GB) and found the battery life in both to be about the same as long as i utilized the cell data option and lo battery option similarly in both. It isn't ideal but I did want to have the faster one and i'm working with what works for me. Just for group info.

I spoke with Apple on the phone yesterday. The tech tried to approve an exchange for a new one but their system wouldn’t allow it because the three battery tests indicate the battery is good. She sought supervisory approval but the supervisor couldn’t do it either. The only thing they could do was to make me an appointment with a genius (again) for a battery replacement. I politely pointed out that the solution doesn’t make sense. Why replace the battery when the tests say it’s not the problem? The only response I got was that the genius might find something else wrong. IMHO it seems to be a hardware issue that has something to do with the screen. The ipad only eats up battery life when the screen is on (I only use it to read books off line). It doesn’t get hot when I charge it, even overnight. I have erased it twice and set it up as a new one rather than using a backup. I have updated the software, turned off everything in the background, etc. and nothing changed. The last time (based on the recommendation of the Apple tech) I even tried erasing it with my mac, no change. Four hours of book reading is ridiculous battery life and the thing gets so hot it isn’t comfortable to hold. I have Applecare+ and don’t feel like it was worth the expense let alone the cost of the device… We’ll see what the genius has to say.

Update: The Apple store ordered me a replacement iPad. Unfortunately it is not new, refurbished. I hate that I paid full price three months ago and it has been a POS since day one but I didn’t realize it until after the return window. I guess I should look at refurbished products in the future since Apple Care+ fine print gives them the option of replacing new with refurbished. Hopefully this refurbished one has been thoroughly tested and will work correctly. This experience is worse than when I purchased my first macbook with the butterfly keyboard they discontinued three years after I bought mine. I’ve bought many Apple products but I seem to gravitate toward the ones with design or production flaws…
