Final Cut Pro out-transitions cut to black at the beginning instead of transitioning

I've been using FCPX for 12 years, but have always been frustrated by transition behaviors at times. Today's the day I'm going to ask the brain trust here why this happens. Often when I use an out-transition, instead of what I expect to happen — the clip in question is supposed to transition to nothing — it will chop to black at the beginning of the out-transition instead. No transition at all. I've made a screen capture here to demonstrate the problem. I've been working all day to find a work-around, and it remains elusive. Yes, I've deleted prefs, tried making a compound clip, restarted, and even reset the NVRAM.

The clip I'm trying to transition out of in this case has an alpha channel, but I've gotten this at times with every other type of clip with no seeming rhyme or reason. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. Here's the video I made to illustrate the problem:

Notice that I've placed a green element underneath to show that the transition makes an otherwise transparent area opaque black at the beginning of the out-transition. And the last time through I remove the transition so you can see that the alpha is working during that stretch.

There's something fundamental I don't understand about FCPX transitions and never have. Can someone please tell me what I'm doing wrong here?

OK. The problem is the underlying video is connected underneath the primary storyline. The project should not be laid out like that. Either the green background is on the primary storyline, or both the background and the alpha clip are connected above the primary storyline.

This happens with regularity on regular videos a lot. But the wrinkle this time is that the transition doesn't just turn everything black at the beginning of the transition like it usually does. This time the transition works like it's supposed to, but makes the transparent part of the clip opaque black. That I actually haven't seen before.

Every workaround I have tried has failed. Even exporting a NON-alpha ProRes file, and then just using a mask (I even tried different masks), still, the result is the same. I also just deleted the prefs again and rebuilt them from scratch. Again, transitions — particularly at the end on the timeline have always been unreliable for me. This is why for the past couple of years, I've just used a black color solid on top with an IN-transition to achieve a fade-to-black.
