AppleTV 4K music app has audio dropping

I’ve got a nasty issue where an audio selection will start, but the audio drops out after a few seconds. On screen, it appears the track is progressing, yet no sound. It’s not track specific. Takes place all of the time on a wide variety.

It occurs on two separate AppleTV 4k devices. I’ve tried cables, connecting to different models of tV, two different models of Rotel AV preamps. It’s maddening. I’ve also seen issues with Amazon Prime video app where you see no picture but you have audio. Stop, restart the same video and it may work.

Amazon’s Music app works perfectly. Apples music app running on a smart tv works fine.

You don't mention if there's anything in common with the audio source format that drops out (like stereo, Dolby 5.1, Dolby Atmos)... I'm suspecting a known issue where various audio equipment setups intermittently choke on ATV4K's Dolby Atmos implementation. The issue is most commonly seen while using Netflix, but happens on other streaming services as well, including some Atmos-encoded Apple Music tracks. This lengthy thread includes a lot of gripes and some good information spanning 300+ posts.

The issue summary is that the ATV4K decodes incoming Dolby Digital Plus-encoded Atmos audio streams and delivers over HDMI it as multichannel LPCM (uncompressed) audio using Dolby MAT (Metadata-enhanced Audio Transport) Atmos encoding. This form of Dolby Atmos encoding causes some setups to choke, and it's not clear if it's due to the increased bandwidth usage of the uncompressed audio or simply glitches in the transcoding process. It's not a universal problem - some chimed into the above-referenced thread to report no issues with their Atmos-capable systems, but the word is that Apple's looking into it.

Been there, done that. I’ve used every possible configuration from running into two different Rotel av preamp bypassing the tv and trying three different monitors. Also, when the audio drops, the tv speakers also have no output. Restarts don’t resolve the issue.

listening to a track that fails, stop/start the track may play fine, then two tracks later fails just a few seconds in.

I forgot to state also, there are issues trying to play music videos. Audio drops shortly after starting the video. This happens often enough that I could make a test case for debug code.

different high grade cables (all pass AppleTV tests), outlets (Volt meter tested), attached devices, two different apple AppleTV. My network is extremely clean and very fast (20 years as a Network escalation engineer). I use enterprise grade hardware.

Multiple other music apps on the same AppleTV work perfectly.

It’s all two channel audio tracks. This AM, it fudged on David Gates goodby girl. Prior to the last three firmware updates, I’ve never had a problem for years and years. It’s only been an issue with the Apple Music app and Prime video. I’ve tried every setting apple allows.

I don’t listen to multichannel music. My other music apps function normally. Its happening often enough to irritate the **** out of me.

Theres nothing odd in the tcp stream when the event takes place. Packet traces look clean in both functioning and non functioning.

I’ve got a full gigabit (up and down) fiber run into my system. I’ve monitored the ip traffic while the device is playing (managed switch). Even a 4K streaming video makes just a minor bump in my systems bandwidth.

100% of the time, I run the AppleTV device into the monitor, then fiber out to my preamp. Keeps it simple for the spouse. I’ve only connected into the Preamp to remove any chance the tv may be involved. It’s happened on Samsung QLED, two Vizio 65” 4K (different models)
