Voice Memos Taking Up Significant Storage

Hi all,

For some reason, my Voice Memos app is taking up a whopping 27GB on my iPhone XR. I tried deleting all the voice memos on my phone, and I'm still getting the same result. I've also tried resetting it a few times. I'm about to try to restore it from a backup, but if anyone else has other ideas or has run into this before, please let me know. Thanks!

Hello Kobozo,

After you deleted the Voice Memos, did you clear them out of the Recently Deleted folder as well? If not, they'll still take up space until they automatically clear out of that folder in 30 days.

In the Voice Memos app select the back button at the top left and see if you have a Recently Deleted folder showing. If you do, and there's items in there you'll want to clear them out to free up that space.

Edit or delete a recording in Voice Memos on iPhone

Cheers!

I have the same, with all latest updates. I did escalate to apple support as it happens the same with other apps (whatsapp/Diji Fly, Voice Memo) only this i notice as this is the most active apps with data increase and reduce. When the data increases it grows and when I delete it it does not reduce. The final answer I got for (whatsapp ) was delete the app and reinstall. Though it works, it does not make sense that we have to, every time delete the apps and reinstall. There has been numbers of updates after my escalation to apple support but no improvements on this.

The OS fails to resize the database as the date in it reduces. With the Whatsapp the data size shows reduction but not at Apple storage.

Hey Chris

it should work even if your voice memo exceed the iphone storage. My voice memo was giving me 2.3TB although my iphone storage was 128GB. Just delete the voice memo app and turn it off from icloud. And transfer your data to a new iphone even if it has same storage size. Make sure both phones have latest iOS versions. This worked for me, let me know if it works for you.

It might work if your another iphone have enough space. my old phone is 256G, voice memo takes 370G, it was not allowed to tranfer data to my 512G new phone. Apple support replied that voice memo data is "zipped". it was 400+G when backup to icloud. maybe I need a 1T iphone, but what if the voice memo data size increase to 2T?

I had spent 6 hours in Apple store but could not have it fixed!!!

That is a good point, I forgot to check that. Unfortunately, though, that isn’t the issue since the space remains taken up even after I delete the app. Also, I added up the combined storage taken up by all the voice memos I had before (I exported them to my MacBook), and it adds up to roughly 1.2 GB. Even if the voice memos were still all on my phone, it wouldn’t add up.

I’m wondering if the iPhone is misattributing the consumed storage to Voice Memos when it should be attributed to something else more substantial like Photos. I’m going to test that later when I can properly import my photos to my Dell laptop.

This picture shows how the app’s storage appears on my device after I delete the app.

Hey Staniel

I was able to solve the same issue but you need another iphone or if you are willing to upgrade your phone. so you do the following:

1-Delete the voice memo app

2-turn voice memo off from iCloud

3-update your phone to ios16

4-transfer data to another iphone with ios16 using phone to phone transfer.

5- After data transfer, on new phone the issue of voice memo will be resolved

6- now to resolve the issue on old phone you need to erase all contents and settings

I am experiencing the same issue. I have iphone 12 pro with the latest iOS version

  1. I used to have data in voice memo app
  2. I deleted all of the data once I found that it was taking 100G in my iphone
  3. I was still able to see the data taking up space in storage page so I deleted the app
  4. Now I see the same screen like this post with deleted app thumbnail.

This is taking almost half of my storage. Is there a way to fix this?

I dont think this will be cleared after 30 days as it has been over a month on my end.

hi, I am struggling with the same issue. I don’t believe I saw a solution in the comments. I’ve tried hard resets and everything. The app is deleted off my phone but somehow says it’s taking 1.6 TB of space. That’s impossible! Haha But I’m having trouble now with doing anything on my phone because I don’t have the space. Any recommendations?

My daughter's iPhone Xr is now crippled by this problem. She deleted all voice memos, deleted the app. Yet she has 10.14TB (!!!!) calculated for voice memos!!!!!

Apple this is a MAJOR fail. She can't transfer her data to her new iPhone13, can transfer to her 2TB iCloud for an iCloud backup and can't back up on her Mac--all because her iPhone Xr running iOS 15.5 will NOT recalculate and remove the bizarrely large voice memo allocation.

FIX THIS NOW APPLE!

iPhone 11 Pro checking in here. Same exact issue. Can't backup phone because Voice Memos shows 3TB of data even though my phone is only 64GB. I've tried everything previously suggested - deleting the few memos I had, deleting the app, resetting all settings, hard resets, etc. Even tried using a paid third party app (iMazing) to backup the phone... nothing works. I had a similar issue with this 11 Pro only 10 months after purchasing it. Not related to Voice Memos, but related to not being able to back up the phone. Apple couldn't solve the issue and just gave me a new 11 Pro instead. Now here we are again, 17 months after the replacement phone, 5 months after the 1-year warranty ended, and I'm dead in the water. Planned obsolescence, I presume. Looks like it's finally Android time.

I spoke to a support rep, they informed me this bug was patched on a release, and because I deleted the app, the patch was not installed. Eventually it “sorted itself out” not sure what resolved everything.

  • im a software engineer on an operating system and I was happy to hear they were on top of this, the rep was informative and helpful, and really helped alleviate the stress. -hope this self resolves itself with you as well
