Voice Memos Taking Up Significant Storage

Hi all,

For some reason, my Voice Memos app is taking up a whopping 27GB on my iPhone XR. I tried deleting all the voice memos on my phone, and I'm still getting the same result. I've also tried resetting it a few times. I'm about to try to restore it from a backup, but if anyone else has other ideas or has run into this before, please let me know. Thanks!

Hi,

I am experiencing the same issue. My iPhone (8 - 256GB capacity) is saying it is pretty much full with Voice Memos taking 49TB (which is impossible). So far I have tried:

  • removing all files from the Voice Memos app
  • deleting the Voice Memos app (after this, iPhone storage still showed com.apple.VoiceMemos taking the same space as before - 49TB)
  • reinstalled the Voice Memos app (and now I can't even open it, it crashes every single time I try to open it)
  • resetting my iPhone settings (including restarting the phone multiple time)

None of these have worked.

Please provide guidance on how to fix this issue asap. Now I can't use my phone as it constantly throws messages about your iPhone is full, manage storage, etc.

Same question as above

my phone says that Documents and Data take up 44.5 GB, but the voice memos themselves only take up 33.5GB

When I delete other items on my phone the storage stats update to a smaller number,

when I delete individual Voice Memos, the Voice Memo (lower number on screen shot) goes down, but the Documents and Data storage number appear “stuck”

please fix. Thank you

Same problem. 9.5TB reported by Voice Memos whether I have it installed or deleted. I even cleaned out my iCloud Voice Memos data. I seems to be preventing me from backing up my iPhone for over 2 months now, with an error saying that my machine does not have enough space to back up my phone. So I am unable to do a backup and restore to try to solve this issue.

Apple, please fix this!!!

My daughter's iPhone Xr is now crippled by this problem. She deleted all voice memos, deleted the app. Yet she has 10.14TB (!!!!) calculated for voice memos!!!!!

Apple this is a MAJOR fail. She can't transfer her data to her new iPhone13, can transfer to her 2TB iCloud for an iCloud backup and can't back up on her Mac--all because her iPhone Xr running iOS 15.5 will NOT recalculate and remove the bizarrely large voice memo allocation.

FIX THIS NOW APPLE!

I have the same, with all latest updates. I did escalate to apple support as it happens the same with other apps (whatsapp/Diji Fly, Voice Memo) only this i notice as this is the most active apps with data increase and reduce. When the data increases it grows and when I delete it it does not reduce. The final answer I got for (whatsapp ) was delete the app and reinstall. Though it works, it does not make sense that we have to, every time delete the apps and reinstall. There has been numbers of updates after my escalation to apple support but no improvements on this.

The OS fails to resize the database as the date in it reduces. With the Whatsapp the data size shows reduction but not at Apple storage.

I have the same issue on iPhone SE(2) and it prevents me from migrating to a newly purchased iPhone SE(3). I had spent more than 6 hours on 5 hourlong calls with Apple support, and even tried to go to Apple store to resolve the issue. I was sent to go and call the support by Apple store employee. Still no resolution and I am running out of time to return my old iPhone SE2 as a trade it.

Need help.

I have tried backing up to a computer - did not work

I have tried backing up to iCloud - did not work

I have removed all the Voicememo messages and cleared Deleted items. I even uninstalled the Voice Memo app, and it still show in the iPhone storage (which takes 2 hours to populate, btw) that I have 24 TB of VoiceMemos stored somewhere on iCloud.

Please notify me when the solution for this issue is found.

Not having much hope, given that the first message about the issue is dated way to far in the past...

I was able to help a customer out with this issue, not sure if it will work for yall

what we tried was we deleting all the voice memos, tried to off load the app even deleting the app and it was still stuck on the phone.

Since all that was not working what I did after was i went into the settings -> reset -> reset all SETTINGS. NOT FACTORY RESETTING.

worth a shot

it is annoying that it will remove your Face ID, background, passcodes, blue tooth, wifi stuff, etc things related to your settings only.

This is my problem, too. I added up the several tiny files (less than 50 MB - yes, megabytes), then rebooted, then offloaded the files, then rebooted, then deleted the app's data (which failed), then deleted the app, then rebooted, then HARD rebooted, and I still have a phantom 238.43 GB of "used storage" on my 128 GB iPhone. At the top, it still shows me just 67.2 GB of 128 GB used.

And of course, I can't back up because it can't find the files, so I can't restore my last backup, or I lose all manner of things. HELP, APPLE!

iPhone 11 Pro checking in here. Same exact issue. Can't backup phone because Voice Memos shows 3TB of data even though my phone is only 64GB. I've tried everything previously suggested - deleting the few memos I had, deleting the app, resetting all settings, hard resets, etc. Even tried using a paid third party app (iMazing) to backup the phone... nothing works. I had a similar issue with this 11 Pro only 10 months after purchasing it. Not related to Voice Memos, but related to not being able to back up the phone. Apple couldn't solve the issue and just gave me a new 11 Pro instead. Now here we are again, 17 months after the replacement phone, 5 months after the 1-year warranty ended, and I'm dead in the water. Planned obsolescence, I presume. Looks like it's finally Android time.

Hey Staniel

I was able to solve the same issue but you need another iphone or if you are willing to upgrade your phone. so you do the following:

1-Delete the voice memo app

2-turn voice memo off from iCloud

3-update your phone to ios16

4-transfer data to another iphone with ios16 using phone to phone transfer.

5- After data transfer, on new phone the issue of voice memo will be resolved

6- now to resolve the issue on old phone you need to erase all contents and settings

It might work if your another iphone have enough space. my old phone is 256G, voice memo takes 370G, it was not allowed to tranfer data to my 512G new phone. Apple support replied that voice memo data is "zipped". it was 400+G when backup to icloud. maybe I need a 1T iphone, but what if the voice memo data size increase to 2T?

I had spent 6 hours in Apple store but could not have it fixed!!!
