Annoying "disk not ejected properly"

So the last few months this has sure been getting annoying, come to my computer in the morning and insane amount "disk not ejected properly etc" in notifications, takes forever to close all them. Im running a 2019 imac with Monterey version 12.3.1. Been doing this for at least a month but sure has gotten insane lately, most likely since i updated to 12.3.1 Weird thing is I sure can't seem to find much out there info of this problem recently. In Energy saver my settings are bellow.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated

just a WD thunderbolt drive.

old issue, new issue, what changed(?)— "So the last few months..."

Dismount/unplug the WD thunderbolt drive if it is an issue....

Try a different external drive and compare your results. Drives can fail at anytime.

One indication of drive operating in a state of failure is dismounting/remounting errors

you can try a different port. a different cable. a different enclosure in an effort to drill down on the cause.

if no insight or resolve—

For your macOS try a Safeboot to clear caches and sort anomalies

Ya what i kinda found for a work around is leaving another drive plugged in, then nothing falsely ejects. The drive in question is a thunderbolt 2 adapted to current thunderbolt. Never ever gave issues until the last two monterey updates. So was experimenting and left a USB C drive plugged in as well as the thunderbolt, no ejects, Eject the USB C and leave just the WD Thunderbolt, multiple disk not ejected properly. So today I tried just leaving a thumb drive plugged in and nice to see I have had no "disk not ejected properly" notifications so at least till Apple fixes this, this is an easy temporary solution for me. Hope this helps anyone else

Fair enough. However I’ve done this with hard drives since time machine first came out, never had this kind of issue. Last time had two drives plugged in, no ejects, it’s a buggy os, at least from what I found on a developers forum I’m not alone, Monterey has its bugs .

A hard drive should be exclusively for Time Machine and not for storing data file. I'd get another external HD, erase the current drive and use it either for TM or data storage and the new drive for the other.

FWIW I recommend OWC (MacSales.com) for external drives, both SSDs and rotational (for TM use) as they have an excellent reputation for reliability, customer support and honoring their warranties. I have 8 of their SSDs and one rotational (for TM) in use currently. Not a shill for OWC but just a happy camper.

I have the same experience. Never had any drive ejected until after I went up to Monterey. After testing several drives, cables and ports I was able to cut this issue down to only ejected every few weeks by changing over to TB drives. Prior drives were USB 3.2 gen 2 drives. The drive that I have ejected is my Time Machine. My other drive is always solid.
