USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter not charging iPad Air 5th gen

I am using the hdmi port of the adapter to bring video output to a bigger screen and have the charging cable plugged into the usb-c port of the adapter, but the iPad doesn't charge. The charger works fine when plugged directly into the iPad. What am I doing wrong?

Presumably you are using an Apple USB-C Power Adapter - rated to provide at least 20W?

Perhaps your Digital AV Adapter has a fault. If you are able to test the Adapter with another iPad - and see the same issue - then the Adapter is very likely at fault.

If you continue to experience difficulties when using an appropriate Power Adapter, you might be best advised to seek assistance directly from from Apple Support. You can contact the Support Team using the Get Support link at top-right of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

You might best benefit from a visit to the Genius Bar at your local Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider (AASP) - where the technicians will be able to test and assess your iPad, AV Adapter, Power Adapter and cable(s):
