Apple Watch died 15 months in, AppleCare only covers my iPhone

I purchased an apple watch that suddenly died 15 months in, I thought I had apple care but have since found out that only covers my phone. Is there no credit card related protection? I can't believe I have to keep paying for something that just stopped working. It sustained no damage and I did visit the apple store but was told my only option was to pay $299 to have the watch sent away to be checked, which is not an option.
