How can I get back the benefits of my Time machine that came with my computer and recapture all the files I have lost due to an intermittent external drive and poor interaction with the Time Machine app.
Here are the error messages I am getting:
I Have now lost all my contacts and some other files
What can I do to recover the files and get my Time machine working again?

Get a new disk. HDDs have never been cheaper. Fighting the inevitable is seldom a good tactic.
Stubborn disks can sometimes be resurrected by formatting in a Windows machine to NTFS and then going back to the Mac. But with these problems, do you really trust this disk any more?

Thank you for your response. My worry is that this external hard drive has corrupted my original files, such as my CONTACTS, which are completely gone from my iMac. I have ordered a 5T thumb drive to download what ever is salvageable but I don't know how to recover what is gone from my computer. Please advise.
Thank you for your response. To make sure I understand, I will describe what I think this entails. Would you please tell me if I am correct. I take a USB cable and plug one end into my iPhone and the other into my iMac. How do I then command my phone to send its contacts to my computer contacts app? Please advise

You can also restore contacts from iCloud or your iPhone.
As for your Time Machine backups? I’d say you need to reformat the external drive or replace it and start over.
If you can still see the folders on the Time Machine drive from the Finder, you can extract them manually.

FWIW I do not use iCloud and just recently updated the contacts in my iPhone 8 to my 2018 Mac Mini using a USB connection and it worked perfectly.

select Info > options
check sync contacts
click apply
