After installing the latest Monterey version 12.4 update, the keyboard icon for the American Flag has been changed to a dark grey box with US in the box. Please allow the original American Flag icon to be placed in the icon as a Choice for those that prefer the American Flag icon.

The flags are gone for all keyboard countries with the latest MacOS 12.4 update. Instead we have this very ugly lettered ICON that for many countries is hard to read and distinguish , especially if you use several keywords ( French, English, italian, Portuguese, etc ... ). Apple, this is not a political statement. You need to restore them ( all ) . Countries are recognized by their flags, allover the world. Do the right thing.

That's the problem, imported layouts are in a different location and have a different status than the Apple supplied ones. I can't remember for sure but I think you always need one Apple version on the list.
Just bring back the flags as an option! Please, it's really hard to tell apart all the different languages I have set for my keyboard. I have five! The flags make it quick for me, so please bring it back as an option at least.

I still suppose this topic is about the flag icon in MacOS. If you want to go full-patriot or get painful tattoo art, you want other forums, but I could be wrong.
French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Czech, Russian, Romanian, Maori, Swedish, Strangely, my Yiddish has the symbol for it still showing. I guess because it was an outside keyboard, and not part of the Apple selection. So I guess I need 9 flags in addition to the US one, back.
Honestly, the removal of the flags and showing this black and white little box was the disappointment of today when I discovered it.
The thing is, I am using 2-3 different keyboards, as in different languages and when changing it between them, it was super easy with a quick glance to identify which one I am using at the moment and change it if needed.
Now my brain needs a few seconds to process this and honestly, I am not even sure what is the value and benefit of having the black-white design instead of the flags. It was super easy to notice the colorful flags and now...
Yes, it is a small thing, but not convinced..

That seems likely. Also, one country can have multiple languages. So, using the flag wouldn't necessarily be helpful for say, Canada.

I don't think Apple has ever used a Japanese flag, if that is what you are after. Japanese input is the past already used black/white icons with Japanese characters in them.
I just updated OS in about half a year and this was the FIRST THING I noticed. I was so used to the American flag as my default for telling me what language Im on. I also type in other language and the other language showed up as black/white, because of this, now the new icon makes me think Im not on the US language. I would also like a change back, knowing Apple this is a permanent change with a weaker replacement.
Quite disappointing as they just keep taking out functions that I really enjoy and is part of my work flow.
Even when I do look at the keyboard icon when switching keyboard with keyboard shortcut I can literally fill that a different part of brain is involved in recognition and it takes much more brain power cycles than before when recognition was based on color.
BTW, If you didn't use several keyboards before you probably won't notice anything wrong. Perhaps that's what happened in this case in the chain of command in Apple when approving this change. Apple would benefit from doing more "hallway" testing early in the design process, so things like upside down logo on Powerbooks G3, or the charging adaptor on magic mouse, or indeed this new keyboard icon on Monterey won't happen.

This change was clearly made in a hurry because, why would you want to have the icon AND the input source name, which is basically the same thing now?
Yea mines too. At first I thought my update was corrupted or some but its does looks ugly. I hope they bringing back
It took a while but I am now used to the new SU keyboard menu item instead the old flag ;-)
