Cannot open attachments in Outlook after update to 11.6.6.

Did recently update MacOS to 11.6.6. and now I cannot open attachments. Outlook says 'The file “<name of file>[1].pdf” couldn’t be opened because you don’t have permission to view it. ... '

I do open Outlook Temp directory (in private/var/folders/.../com.microsoft.Outlook/Outlook Temp), the attachment is saved there but is Locked. Viewing file info shows me with Read&Write privilege as I have admin rights everywhere.

When I manually untick Locked status, then I can open the attachment from the Outlook. But I have to do it with each attachment which makes it almost unusable. On next start of Outlook after being quit the problem appears again as the Outlook Temp directory is completely deleted on Outlook exit.

Saving the attachment works, then the file is not Locked. I can also Quick look the attachment, but in quick look I don't see extended word formatting, notes in PDF etc.

This problem appeared immediately after update to 11.6.6. - before the update, everything was ok.

All... I believe I found the solution. I recently upgraded to Big Sur and could not open attachments on Outlook for Mac. I turned off "Connect Fonts" which is the latest version of Extensis's Suitcase Fusion Font Manager.

Once I turned that off, POOF... my jpg attachments would open with a simple double click. Once I turned CF back on... the attachments wouldn't open.

So, if you use a 3rd party font management program... try turning that off and see if it saves the problem.

Be sure to restart your mail program after you turn off any font management apps.

Good luck!

The same issue in my MacBook after the update, when I contacted apple support they refused to support me since I am using an older model, Microsoft support tried to solve it since I am using a subscription, below is their suggestion to analyse the log, but I could not follow.

--------------------------------------------

Please follow these steps to gather a troubleshooting logs and send us the logs for further investigation:

1. On the Window menu click Sync Errors (keyboard shortcut: Command-8)

2. Click on the gear icon on top right of the Sync Errors window

3. Select the Turn on logging for troubleshooting option, and then click OK.

4. Restart Outlook and when prompted to turn off logging click "Leave Logging On" and reproduce the issue you experience and then Quit Outlook to stop the log capture.

From Finder, click on the Go menu - Select Go to Folder... Copy and Paste the following path into the "Go to" box and click Go: ~/Library/Containers/com.microsoft.Outlook/Data/Library/Logs

5. Find the latest log file that has Microsoft Outlook at the front of the logfile name with .log as file extension. Select the file and on the Edit menu click copy (keyboard shortcut: Command-c).

6. Click on your desktop and on the Edit menu click Paste Item (keyboard shortcut: Command-v)

7. Please upload the to a cloud drive such as Google Drive or Dropbox and share the link.

If your file size is over 20MB, I suggest you compress the log file by following these steps:

1. Select the file or folder in the Finder.

2. Right-click or control-click on the file to bring up the pop-up menu.

3. Select Compress filename.

4. The Mac will begin to compress the file or folder you've selected. Once it's done, you'll find a filename that ends in .zip.

To disable logging:

Restart Outlook and when prompted to turn off logging click "Turn Logging Off" **If you disable logging manually you must restart Outlook to fully disable logging, otherwise it will continue logging in the background**

We had the issue with one of our users. You can try these temp solutions.

I set the default PDF viewer to be Adobe Acrobat so it opens in Acrobat rather than in Preview.

(Right click on Any PDF - Get Info - Open With - Change it to Adobe Acrobat. If you don't have Acrobat Reader, install it from Adobe website)

You can also set default JPEG/Image files to another App.

Yes it is a big bug and quite disruptive. We can moan all we want here but that does no good. Apple does not monitor these discussions. There is no "fix". What you (and every affected user as well) can do is take the 2 minutes and file a bug report with Apple.

1. Go to the following website: apple.com/feedback/

2. Select a Service or Product

3. There will be a form for you.

4. Provide necessary and complete details about your Feedback.

5. Don’t forget to add your email address. This can be optional.

Apple won’t be able to respond to every feedback that they

receive. However, there’s still a chance that you will receive a

response from them.

6. If you are done filling up the form, just simply click the Submit button.

There’s also a Feedback Assistant application that is available to Mac users.

How to Submit Feedback through the Assistant App (MacOS);

• Spotlight Feedback Assistant to locate it (assuming it is installed on your computer). Open it.

• If this is the very first time that you are using the app, you will be

asked to agree to the license agreement. Just simply click the Accept

and Continue button.

• Sign in using your Apple ID and password when prompted.

• Click the New Feedback Button

• Describe your issue and click Continue and Submit after you are done.

I have this issue too. I reported it to Apple and Microsoft. It occurs in Mail as well as in Outlook and has only happened after 11.6.6 upgrade. It was not occurring on my MBP M1 2020 (running Monterey), just on my iMac 5k late 2014 (running BigSur 11.6.6).

I decided I didn't want to use the irritating and cumbersome workaround of dragging stuff to the desktop, or quitting the helper application for each and every document, so I took the plunge and used the instructions here to patch Monterey and install it on my (otherwise Monterey incompatible) iMac.

I should add that I backed up my iMac first, and I have all my documents in iCloud so I was not at risk of losing data. I found this process quite anxiety producing nevertheless but I had decided to give it a go as my iMac was if not unuseable, then quite frustrating to use. But this is not a recommendation so do this at your own risk!

Result:

a) bug is gone. I can open documents as usual right from the mail program (Mail or Outlook)

b) using all the nice features of Monterey. In particular am enjoying the new focus modes, quick notes and especially the universal control which gives me 30% more screen real estate than I had.

Very happy. And thanks to Mr Macintosh for such a clear video.

Chris.

PS - I should add that my iMac is only just not compatible with OS upgrades: Monterey is the first OS which was not supported. Also that when I bought it, I maxed out the processor and graphics card as I wanted a machine that was going to last (and it has). If you've an older / slower Mac it might not work as well. The video has instructions on that. The performance of my iMac is fine for what I use it for: word processing, email and large spreadsheets.

I also had this issue and have reported it to apple after stumbling across this thread... in reporting to apple, they dont even list 11.6.6 as an operating system option drop down menu to report the issue! I am wondering if its because my email address I use outlook for isn't associated with my mac?

My work around has been to drag and drop the item to my desktop (which it does let me do) and then edit the permissions through the info panel. I hope they fix this soon cause this is annoying...

I have exactly the same issue and have spent about 2 hours on the phone to Microsoft support level 2 and their answer was to download the attachments before opening them which is doable but highly impractical. My iMac won't let me upgrade to Monterey. I have a MacBook Pro running Monterey and it doesn't have the problem at all and neither does my crappy old Windows PC that's about a hundred years old. I'm guessing it's also a one way street and there's no going back to 11.6.5.

Can confirm the exact same issues here.

I filed a report with Apple via Feedback Assistant yesterday; so far it reports/shows no similar reports; folks, please let Apple know about this bug.

Likewise with Microsoft through its Outlook "Contact Support" option under the Help menu (after a full day the "chat" assistants also tell me they have no similar reports).

This isn't gonna get fixed without some input from more than one user!
