Monterey 12.0.1-12.4 & Magic Mouse Issues?

There have been many reports of Magic Mouse/trackpad freezes, resistance or sluggishness over the last few months in this forum. Many have noticed that this coincided with the update from Big Sur to Monterey 12.0.1. There have also been varied reports of macOS 12.3 also fixing the issue for some.

No such luck for me however as all sequential updates from 12.0.1 to 12.4 have not changed anything.

I have an iMac 24", the problem is intermittent and infrequent, lasting only a few seconds if I respond by shaking or picking up and moving the mouse along rather forcefully. Apple support have replaced the mouse under warranty without resolution. I have done all the usual things like deleting preference files and resetting the bluetooth module with no effect. There is no issue with the apple bluetooth keyboard.

Is anyone still experiencing a similar issue under Monterey 12.4, or have had Apple acknowledge that this is an issue associated with software or hardware?

Reconnecting the mouse with a computer restart in between as per your (vilaincanard) instructions seems to have addressed and corrected the issue for me. I have been testing for a few days now and the mouse is smooth and stutter free.

If anyone is keen on trying this, then be warned that when you turn off the mouse, you cannot use it to access and make selections in System Preferences/Bluetooth or restart the computer. I used my keyboard to move my pointer as per the apple support article Control the pointer using Mouse Keys on Mac – Apple Support (AU)

You could also connect a USB wired or wireless mouse.

In addition I also took steve626's advice and updated my mouse mat. It seems that PU leather or a vinyl surface seem to be preferred over fabric these days, and this certainly has made the mouse more responsive as it glides easily in response to my movements.

This had been bugging me for quite a few months, so happy to have it resolved at last.

Hi, I had the same issue after upgrading to macOS Monterey 12.4. After reading this thread, I tried the following which was successful for me in resolving my usb mouse sluggishness behavior:

  • turn off the mouse
  • remove the mouse device in System Preferences/Bluetooth
  • restart the computer
  • turn on the mouse
  • add the mouse device in System Preferences/Bluetooth

Hope it works for you.

Yes, using the Magic Mouse on M1 Mac Mini.

Just after the 12.4 update, experienced what you have described on the first cold boot after the 12.4 was applied.

Momentary sluggishness to the point of Turning Off the Mouse, pause 4 second and turn it back On and presto - like new and very responsive.

Beyond that - nothing intrusive like deleting the plist for the mouse or any other actions.

Apple the 12.4 over 12.3.1 on May 16 and have never looked back since then.

Thanks for your reply. The Senior Advisor asked me to switch the wifi to 5G instead of 2.4. I was already on 5 G.This was at the request of the engineer .

The Senior advisor told me that it is a known issue that bluetooth mouse and keyboards intermittently turn off. He told me that I would have to pair them very time I wanted to use them.I have never had to do that before its apple Magic Mouse or magic keyboard. I guess, I could but that is inconvenient and I feel that there needs to be a solution to this.

Problem solved today after 4 weeks. It appears that when Apple replaced the Logic Board on the MBP, one of the connector pins for a part that makes Bluetooth work and stabilize, was not correctly installed. In all the diagnostics, this was not flagged by the Senior advisors. Today at the Genius Bar, great support techs figured it out. All good and works now. Happy

Since your keyboard works fine, it's probably not bluetooth. Sounds like the mouse itself, but you replaced it already. Look carefully at the surface you are moving the mouse over, it should be uniform, smooth, and preferably a dark color. Also, check that the optical sensor underneath is clean and unimpaired.

Do you have a wired mouse you can try? Almost any USB mouse will work, but best would be a wired optical mouse.

I have the same issue. Update 12.3.1 Monterey crashed my MBP ( Nov 2021 ). Apple replaced the Logic Board.Since then, Apple Keyboard and Magic Mouse do not connect. If they connect its intermittent. Case is with Senior advisors. I have spoken to at least 4 of them. They sent the logs to the engineers. Engineers asked to make sure wifi was on 5G and not 2.4. Did not help. senior advisor at a loss. One senior advisor asked why I would want to use a Bluetooth keyboard ??? Because ergonomically, its better !

Still no reply from senior advisor. Have used macs for last 15 years. This is first time i am questioning Apples support and quality.

If anyone has a solution to this , it would be much appreciated.

Thanks for the response.

I'll try anything, however yes new mouse, optical sensor clean, mouse mat has been in use with my previous iMac21" for many years, and now this one. Predominantly dark colour, in the pattern of a Turkish carpet, and a little textured. The mouse and mat were also fine before Monterey. I don't have a USB mouse to try. From what I have gleaned in the forums, USB mice are usually OK regarding this issue.

I will try a dark coloured smooth mouse mat, however I don't think that is the problem.

I have no wifi interference issues that I know of. Devices and the 2.4 gHz band can disrupt wireless mice and peripherals and in turn bluetooth signals as they share the same band. I have a few devices using this band, however nothing new has been introduced since the issue manifested. USB3 hubs, docs and cables do interfere, but I have nothing actively connected (ie turned on). I have also pulled my USB3 connectors from my Mac to no effect.

I have also used activity monitor to look for processes that might hog or overwhelm the CPU. Nothing detected.

A thread specifically questioning the role of macOS Monterey may be found below. It has not had a reply in a while, hence why I have revived it.

I will continue to assess the action taken in my last post to reconnect the mouse. So far so good, but that's not saying anything yet.

Thank you for your suggestion. One of the problems with this issue for me is that it is infrequent and short lasting so testing may take some time. I do not heavily use my iMac, mostly browsing, emails and some work with Pages and Numbers.

In any event I have had one cold reboot since update to 12.4 and I did as you suggested, turn the mouse off (for 30 secs rather than 4 secs) then on.

As it turns out the issue manifested again shortly after. The mouse was sluggish or lagging in it's horizontal movement rather than vertical movement on this occasion. I have increased the mouse tracking speed setting in past instances, but it made no difference.

I have now removed and reconnected my mouse as the previous responder WheelieNick suggested. So now waiting to see the outcome.

Your issue appears to be serious. I assume that you your connectivity was good before updating to 12.3.1?

Did you upgrade from Big Sur 11 directly to Monterey 12.3.1 or was it from an earlier version of Monterey?

I agree Apple Support does not engender a great deal of trust or confidence. They follow a very rigid path with troubleshooting and solutions, which works well with common issues. However the more difficult cases require a bit more listening, ingenuity and lateral thinking, and a lot less of a stubborn attitude.

Your problem may turn out to be hardware related, which does not rule out a similar mechanism for mine.

Did the engineers seriously expect you to connect your MBP to wireless 2.4 gHz permanently, or that you should not use a wireless keyboard?

Best of luck, and post back when and how you resolved your issue.
