How to resolve Slow Email Opening on macOS Monterey 12.4

Monterey 12.5 was released a few days ago. Have you tried it? It's available at the App Store.

Even when you turn off "Protect Mail Activity" (but leave "hide IP on) in mail preferences?

So far:

• Upgrading to the latest OS made no difference
• Uninstalling Avast Antivirus SEEMS to have solved the issue!

I say SEEMS, because I have had the false OKs in the past. I'll keep you informed.

In my case, too, the total removal of Avast software solved the issue. I know it's not the same for everyone, but just another datapoint for all of you.

Updating to Ventura fixed this for me.

Finally I found a solution. This command in the terminal helped me

rm -f ~/Library/Application\ Support/Mail/Plug-ins/Bundles/Library/Mail/Bundles/Properties.plist

Have the same problem.

I did 'SHIFT - OPEN'.

It does help. Most 98% display normal in presenting themselves. keep the fingers crossed.

Some mails are still slow. Is it attachments? It is, I saw, specifically on first opening (in my test of N=1). It is as if Monterey performs some checks.

• Or the relationship with my F-Secure scanning software is not perfect.

Old Toad - And even better:

packages like Microsoft powerpoint, Excel etc work faster. Probably they also go through the filtering and checking program of F-Secure. There must be a long backlog or queueueueueue there.

(On my wives machine I had already disabled it, slowing her High Sierra down).

Well I tried the restarting in Safe Mode to clear the caches and whatever, so I'll report back if that did anything. I recall reading somewhere that MacOS Ventura will have a rewritten mail app with much better search capabilities (I still miss Eudora for this and other reasons, but I've not mustered the courage of transitioning to Thunderbird or something else). So hopefully this bug will be fixed and not too many new ones created.

This work around works for me...

I was hopeful the latest OS 12.6 Monterey update would fix the problem but it did not. But I discovered a simple work around. I can open my emails if I first close the Mail app on my taskbar then reopen it. Emails will open then - for a while. If I put my computer to sleep, I have to go through the process again. At least I don't have to wait around as long as before since I discovered this work around.

This is not a proper fix but a workaround. I set up a new space just for mail in mission control and leave Mail open there all the time and I have no problems viewing messages.I just have to switch to that space when I want to use Mail. It's not ideal but at least I don't have to wait 5/10 minutes for a mail to open now! I hope that's helpful to others in this situation.

I updated my iMac 2019 from Monterey to Ventura. No problems!! And its fantastic.

Solved my irritating slow e-mail opening and other issues. I called Apple support and they held my hand through the update which takes a while since its so big.

Just wanted to note that I upgraded to Ventura last week and I'm still experiencing the issue. Same as before - Mail will be very slow to load content (I have to wait minutes for it to appear). Usually when this happens, Safari will also refuse to load content, but Firefox works fine. Same as before.

This leads me to believe that some resource that is shared between Mail.app and Safari - but not Firefox - is getting hung up. I've poked around in Activity Monitor but nothing obvious shows up there. Nothing is gobbling up all the CPU or anything like that.

After spending a year trying every suggested solution to the slow Email downloading problem, I finally found the solution. I bought a new M3 iMac. Lightning fast now. It seems the problem was the old rotational hard drives on the Intel iMac.

Try to create a new mailbox/folder and move all your older emails into it.
