How to resolve Slow Email Opening on macOS Monterey 12.4

Seems like ever since my Mac OS Monterey was updated to 12.4, I've had a lot of problems opening my email. I can click on the email envelope to open my email and wait a minute or so for my emails to be downloaded. Then when I click on the email to open, it only opens to show who it's from and the subject, but it may take anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes to fully open the message of the email. Even if it's only 2 or 3 lines. Normally, I could click on the email and it would open completely, whether it was an ad or a letter from someone. Has anyone else had this slow email opening problem?

Here is what worked for me today 6/26/22 (OS Monterey 12.4 on iMac). I went into Mail>Preferences>Privacy and unchecked "Protect Mail Activity." I made sure "Hide IP Address" was checked. Suddenly all my emails will open. It was taking 1-2 minutes or more every day since the last OS update. What a relief. I hope this is useful for you.

I will try the re-install Montery option.

Note I have an 2017 4K Retina machine. before I had the failure of the Fusion drive; it is still broken and I boot externally.

That already made me rather exasperated.

I was thinking to pass this computer off to my wife, and buy a new high-end iMac for myself (after quite some arguing she agreed).

BUT note (no one is reading this at Apple) that I cannot hand over a computer where the email is slow and unresponsive.

So I think I met my Nemesis at apple here.

I'm stuck.

Hands in the hair. Dispair.

That's the same machine I have currently and have no problem with Mail's performance. Have you installed and run any "cleaning", "optimizing", "speed-up", anti-virus or VPN apps on your Mac? Run Etrecheck so we can get a good look at your setup.

Thanks, yes the 4K-2017 is a sitting duck; and even more, it is caged in (to use two proverbs).

I have external Thunderbult/SSD and the machine now starts in 35-50 seconds; it is very responsive. Alas, since then, Mail dropped out.

OK, I already was convinced about F-Secure. I did already: Some time ago I de-installed it with their un-installer. Restarted. Same email problems. I concluded: So it is not F-Secure. I know Apple is 'safe' even though I had some malware at some time (you know, the hobby download burden).

NOW: I put the F-Secure on hold (stop active scanning - of browser and mail probably) and a first quick test shows that I did not get a brown-out. Responsive.

Thanks.

I have been having this issue sporadically ever since I bought a 2021 MBP16 (M1) which came pre-loaded with Monterey. I used Migration Assistant to move my old content over, and I still have a couple Macs running Mojave. Only the Monterey Mac exhibits this issue. Sometimes I'll go weeks without ever seeing the issue, and sometimes it will happen multiple times a day. If you wait long enough, it always self-corrects. A reboot sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. I've applied every Mojave update that's been pushed out. Problem happened again just now.

The other thing I have noticed, when emails don't load, sometimes Safari also does not load content, but FireFox will. This leads me to believe it has something to do with a content rendering engine, or some other resource shared by Mail.app and Safari. But I have also seen it happen where Mail won't load content but Safari will.

Earlier in this thread people mentioned holding down shift while opening Mail and tinkering with the Mail privacy settings and neither one of those did anything.

Because the problem is intermittent, running in Safe Mode isn't really viable as I'd have to run in Safe Mode for days on end to see if the problem recurs.

Thanks OBDave for your reply. This has been going on since they upgraded to macOS Monterey Version 12.4. There have been so many complaints about this, I'm surprised Apple hasn't responded or fixed this problem. It's very frustrating waiting for my email message to open. Seems to me, someone would have a simple solution short of buying a new computer or reverting back to an older version macOS. I can't believe my software is too old (6 years) and is no longer compatible with this latest Version of Monterey. Hopefully there is an answer out there somewhere. Thanks again.

Thanks, but I had it in the shop and they did that. Still very, very slow. It may never open sometimes. Don't know why Apple hasn't at least given us a logical explanation. It would be nice to get the real answer instead of so many guesses. Too many people are having the same problem, so there defiantly is a problem, but what is it?

Aug 4, 2022 7:37 PM in response to Mfiles

Thanks for all the replies. Obviously, this is a glitch in Apple's macOS Monterey Version 12.4 & 12.5. I've tried most things people have suggested and no change. Had an Apple Tech to my house and even took it into the Apple repair and no one seems to be able to tell me the same thing twice. Everyone has a different theory. Guess I'll just have to wait until a new mac OS comes out other than Monterey.

Aug 4, 2022 7:53 PM in response to olyman1955

Well I tried the restarting in Safe Mode to clear the caches and whatever, so I'll report back if that did anything. I recall reading somewhere that MacOS Ventura will have a rewritten mail app with much better search capabilities (I still miss Eudora for this and other reasons, but I've not mustered the courage of transitioning to Thunderbird or something else). So hopefully this bug will be fixed and not too many new ones created.

I did copy and pasted here, but when I try to send, it says I exceeded the 5000 caricatures. How else can I send this? Email? Maybe I'll try to send half here and the other half in another reply.

Description:

Ever since Apple updated to macOC Monterey Version 12.4 and 12.5, my c

omputer works fine, except for my email. When I click on the envelope

at the bottom, my email opens and shows all my new emails. But, when I

click on an email to open, it opens, but the message may take a minut

e to 5 minutes or more and in some cases it never shows the message. A

fter trying several times, it may open. If I close it and go to the ne

xt one, it me do the same. If I go back to the one I first opened, it

may not show the message again. This gets very frustrating. Then once

in a great while they may open right away. Later they will open but no

t show the message again. Why is this happening with my email only?
