How to resolve Slow Email Opening on macOS Monterey 12.4

Seems like ever since my Mac OS Monterey was updated to 12.4, I've had a lot of problems opening my email. I can click on the email envelope to open my email and wait a minute or so for my emails to be downloaded. Then when I click on the email to open, it only opens to show who it's from and the subject, but it may take anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes to fully open the message of the email. Even if it's only 2 or 3 lines. Normally, I could click on the email and it would open completely, whether it was an ad or a letter from someone. Has anyone else had this slow email opening problem?

Here is what worked for me today 6/26/22 (OS Monterey 12.4 on iMac). I went into Mail>Preferences>Privacy and unchecked "Protect Mail Activity." I made sure "Hide IP Address" was checked. Suddenly all my emails will open. It was taking 1-2 minutes or more every day since the last OS update. What a relief. I hope this is useful for you.

No way I'm going to switch to Windows at this point but I might consider trying Thunderbird if Mail.app isn't fixed in MacOS Ventura. Supposedly they're going to improve the search capability in Mail so I'll wait and see what that's like. The current search is very limited, and I hate how Mail.app scatters attachments in a million different random and weirdly named folders. Eudora used to keep everything into a single attachments folder.

So what it comes down to is that Apple 'breaks' something on purpose to force you to buy a new computer. Something not so bad that they could be held liable, but irritating enough to put you off?

My solution would be to just forward al my mail to a Gmail account and use only that one from now on. Or use the mail service of my domain name provider. I'm certainly not going to buy a new mac to solve an e-mail problem caused by Apple.

Everything I try works for a few times then back to the same problem. The only way I can get emails to open (usually) is to close mail and reopen. Then I have access. I put my computer in "sleep mode" when not using it, maybe shutting it down would improve the email issue however it takes a while to start up. No real resolution unfortunately. Running Monterey 12.5 BTW.

I have 2 large imac's and I initially noticed the very slow opening of emails, 1-2 minutes each time on my 2017 iMac. When I called Apple they said that was normal obsolescence of software and that then only way to solve the problem was buy a new iMac , they couldn't and wouldn't do anything to solve the problem. Now I also have the problem on my other iMac a 2019 although it only happens some of the time.

Well, I just got the notice to upgrade to Monterey 12.5.1. I'm going to start the installation now and see what happens tonight. Let's see if this cures the slow email. I will not buy another Apple computer if this is their new scam to get people to buy new computes. We have to upgrade 3 or 4 times a year until our computer now longer works, so we have to buy a new computer? NO WAY!!

I have the same problem. It is really annoying indeed. Sometimes it takes so much time to show the content that I in the meantime open my work email, gmail etc in the browser instead, while waiting for the very slow mail program to load the content.

This is the case on both my stationary work computer and my laptop (both relatively new machines).

Sorry to say I have to join this long list of Email/Monterey 12.4+5 users with a problem!

After several attempts to get answers, Apple are still not forthcoming with a solution or any explanation other than"buy a new computer" Yeah right.

I have got to the stage now where some sort of legal intervention is being seriously considered by me and several others I know with the same problem.

That said, is it worth it? Remember the battery throttling incident several years ago? Apple managed to drag that out for years before being forced to settle a class action...

Come on Apple get it sorted out now!

OK, it happened again and I think I might have a hint. A buddy suggested that I look at the console log for unusual activity when Mail freezes up like this. This is console.app and I looked at the launchd.log window. I noticed several entries that look like this:

2022-08-29 14:27:40.562004 (gui/501 [100019]) <Warning>: denied lookup: name = com.apple.distributed_notifications@Uv3, requestor = com.apple.WebKi[77517], error = 159: Sandbox restriction
2022-08-29 14:27:40.562222 (system) <Warning>: denied lookup: name = com.apple.tccd.system, flags = 0x8, requestor = com.apple.WebKi[77517], error = 159: Sandbox restriction

And I don't see these entries when Mail gets unstuck. What's interesting - and if you go back in the thread you'll see I've mentioned this before - but sometimes when Mail doesn't want to load content, Safari also doesn't want to load content, but Firefox will. This tells me that 1) it's not a network issue, and 2) there's likely some common resource that Mail and Safari both use, but not Firefox. And it seems plausible that Mail.app uses Webkit to render content for display.

So... a quick google of Monterey webkit sandbox restriction leads me to believe this is some sort of security feature, and perhaps it occasionally goes awry and hangs up.

Next time it happens I'll try going into Activity Monitor and restarting the Webkit processes and see if that does anything.

I just found a new problem with mail. Now if finally the content does appear, I can not 'grab' attachment with the mouse anymore to drag them on my desktop. They disappear and I have to go to the little 'download' pulldown menu to select and save the documents. I'm starting to become very weary of this. How can stuff like that break all of a sudden?
