How to resolve Slow Email Opening on macOS Monterey 12.4

Seems like ever since my Mac OS Monterey was updated to 12.4, I've had a lot of problems opening my email. I can click on the email envelope to open my email and wait a minute or so for my emails to be downloaded. Then when I click on the email to open, it only opens to show who it's from and the subject, but it may take anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes to fully open the message of the email. Even if it's only 2 or 3 lines. Normally, I could click on the email and it would open completely, whether it was an ad or a letter from someone. Has anyone else had this slow email opening problem?

Here is what worked for me today 6/26/22 (OS Monterey 12.4 on iMac). I went into Mail>Preferences>Privacy and unchecked "Protect Mail Activity." I made sure "Hide IP Address" was checked. Suddenly all my emails will open. It was taking 1-2 minutes or more every day since the last OS update. What a relief. I hope this is useful for you.

It would be a great relief;

but I have it checked because there are so many spam email senders that track if I just openend or not, they infer the account is live (if Yes, they'll send a load of new garbage ...)

So I unchecked.

I also had 'protect activities in mail'

  • So Apple should circumvent the problem of giving away my handling of emails then in another way.
  • The feature is a kind of encryption of my email/IP-address, where the two parts of the communication cannot conmmunicatie my identity. Smart.
  • But like all encryption, slow, maybe fast on the M1/M2 that has silicon functions for it. To the expense of older users.

It looks indeed so it looks the hide IP address that comes bundled in with the 'protect activities'

I have been having this issue sporadically ever since I bought a 2021 MBP16 (M1) which came pre-loaded with Monterey. I used Migration Assistant to move my old content over, and I still have a couple Macs running Mojave. Only the Monterey Mac exhibits this issue. Sometimes I'll go weeks without ever seeing the issue, and sometimes it will happen multiple times a day. If you wait long enough, it always self-corrects. A reboot sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. I've applied every Mojave update that's been pushed out. Problem happened again just now.

The other thing I have noticed, when emails don't load, sometimes Safari also does not load content, but FireFox will. This leads me to believe it has something to do with a content rendering engine, or some other resource shared by Mail.app and Safari. But I have also seen it happen where Mail won't load content but Safari will.

Earlier in this thread people mentioned holding down shift while opening Mail and tinkering with the Mail privacy settings and neither one of those did anything.

Because the problem is intermittent, running in Safe Mode isn't really viable as I'd have to run in Safe Mode for days on end to see if the problem recurs.

So what it comes down to is that Apple 'breaks' something on purpose to force you to buy a new computer. Something not so bad that they could be held liable, but irritating enough to put you off?

My solution would be to just forward al my mail to a Gmail account and use only that one from now on. Or use the mail service of my domain name provider. I'm certainly not going to buy a new mac to solve an e-mail problem caused by Apple.

I've methodically followed every suggestion, and none has worked for me. The only thing that mitigates the issue is to leave the mail app open all day on the desktop. The initial load and actual display of emails can take from 2 to 10 minutes, with most showing after 4 minutes.

I've experienced the same issues with Safari, but not Firefox. Also, the Notes app experiences the long wait before displaying the contents, but if left open all day, it's useable.

BTW: If I try to open Mail, Notes, or Safari while one of the other churns, my iMac basically locks until the first app finishes doing whatever is causing the delay.

None of the suggestions worked for me. 2021 MBP 14 inch M1 chip, 16 gigs / 500 / 12.7.4

Tried Safe Boot, unchecked "protect mail activity", checked hide IP. Disabled SIP and rebuilt mail envelope index, dumped caches from user/lib. Still takes 30 seconds to load. Got the same accounts in mail app on an Intel Mac Mini 2018 running Mojave, and it launches immediately!

BTW, you can drag copy the text in Console, or hoghlight the top line you want, then hold Shift & select bottom line you want, the CMD+c... Text is much more useful & easier to deal with.:)

Whilst I'm a bit over my head, it looks like this is the problem...

Might see if there's something mysterious in /Library/PrivilegedHelperTools/ directory and its registration file is located in the /Library/LaunchDaemons/ directory.

Hi BaffledUntilNow,

I feel your pain! I've had the same email thorn for months. Finally booked an appt with a 'genius' to discuss. He told me that my MacBook Air 2013, if it's topping off updates at Monterey, then the operating system I have cannot process the newer OS processing power for applications of Ventura let alone today's Sonoma-in fact even in Monterey my old machine is being overworked. So theoretically mac mail is too far ahead of Monterey to function as it should.

And just fyi, apple says it will be discontinuing support for Monterey by the end of 2024. So Apple's new M3 today or M4 chip soon, will, like all of us over 60, consider Monterey irrelevant.
