Mail won't accept gmail passwords

Mail (mac) won't get any mail, none of the 3 accounts can be taken online, it says it can't verify the password or account. I've done this in Mail, in Mail preferences, in Internet accounts.

I can still get mail on my iPod, (iOS 12) but not on my iPad (iOs 15)--the Ipad is also not accepting the passwords.

Does this have to do with Google's threat to block access to all "less secure apps"?

And is there anything we can do about it? (besides stop using gmail)

Mine are POP as well, I wonder if that has anything to do with it....

Right now the iPod will get 2 out of 3, the iPad only 1 out of 3, the computer none at all.

Gmail online is fine as far as I can tell.

This is very frustrating! I've now tried deleting all keychains and restarting. The only accounts I can use are IMAP, the POP accounts simply won't be verified. Not just in Mail, but in Internet accounts as well, and on the iOS devices too. I've lost so many hours on this. I'm afraid if I can only use IMAP it's going to such a mess, I have 2 different jobs, and 2 computers, and I don't want all my devices to be in sync, I want to control what's on each machine.

I have given in and switched to using IMAP with my gmail accounts.

It is not that bad.

You can still move messages to folders under On My Mac, and they will be removed from the server and only saved on the mac in question. Thus you can still use it pretty much as you would a POP account.
