Disabling multi tasking on iPad - IOS15

I am plagued with side bars constantly popping up when I open an email or a link or anything I am doing. Having looked up what to do, I am told I must have inadvertently activated multi tasking. How is that possible when I have just opened an email? Nevertheless, as instructed, I have opened settings, Home Screen and dock but there is no multitasking button which I am told to turn off. So, if the problem does involve multi tasking, I have no way to turn it off!

I am not sure the problem is even to do with multitasking as I can’t swipe these side bars away. It isn’t a split screen but it prevents me from seeing all of the screen I have opened. They don’t have the black line which I gather indicates a split screen and should enable me to swipe them away.

Being aware that now (running iPadOS 15 or later) the only option to access/control multi-tasking is the “three-dots” button at the top center of the screen (as per these instructions:--> Use multitasking on your iPad - Apple Support), you can submit your comments/requests to Apple directly, using this link:--> Apple – Product Feedback.

The more requests are made, the more likely it is that Apple will change the current settings for this widely used feature on iPads.

You need to explore multitasking. As described, you are very likely have a slide-out view of an App (such as Mail) enabled - as opposed to the split-screen view to which you make passing reference.

Key to accessing and controlling (or avoiding) multi-tasking is the small “three-dot” button that is found at the top-centre edge of the screen.

Unlike iPadOS14 and earlier versions, multi-tasking in iPadOS15 cannot be disabled from settings. Multi-tasking has received a significant overhaul, both simplifying its use and introducing new controls.

More information about using multi-tasking can be found in this support page:

This is a user-to-user technical forum. Complaining to anyone here is pointless - as contributors here are all end-users, just like you. We neither represent, or have any influence with, Apple.

My initial response was an explanation of the issue that you are perhaps experiencing - and offered information as to how you might address your difficulties.

Multitasking features of iPadOS15 are fundamental to this version of the OS - and cannot be disabled. Other than learning to use - or completely avoid - the “three dot” button, there is no workaround.

As with any Operating System, expect change as it evolves. Change occurs for every OS - be it Apple’s macOS, iOS, iPadOS, Microsoft Windows, Linux, Android etc.

Changes unannounced? Not at all. As with each major version of iOS/iPadOS, it was in beta for ~6 months prior to public release. Documentation is extensive - as is technical media coverage.

In case you have not encountered the documentation, the iPad User Guide is a rich source of frequently overlooked information about your iPad and iPadOS. The Guide is available both online using a web browser (such as Safari), or as an Apple Books download:

No, owners of an iPad should be allowed to decide whether multitasking is something they would like to use. I assist numerous seniors with the use of their iPads. This group only has access to the internet through their iPads. They do not use smart phones, they generally don't text or email much. They do not deserve to be forced to re-learn how to use their iPad every time Apple decides they need to "one-up" their own game for fear of not staying relevant. I realize that the implications of Apple's constant tweaking of the current iOS version is to be "new and fresh" but keep in mind that Apple needs to look at their sales metrics and see how many seniors own an iPad. Or maybe no one cares if seniors have access to the internet - like a grandparent for instance. Apple needs to allow the option to turn off multitasking, not just assume that it's okay to keep changing the iOS constantly.

Sure thing only when the users cannot operate the iPad in the way they have been operating it for years, suddenly and without notice, I think this is still a technical issue because the new "feature" cannot be turned off. Plus user ProustGiulio

while mentioning the feedback also commented that this feature cannot be turned off. My hope was there would be a workaround. Plus, people who have physical and/or visual impairments are also having trouble with this "feature" now too. Just trying to help people who struggle with technology, and hoping for a workaround.
