Is there a Mac equivalent of the Steadymouse software?

I have a hand tremor. How do I control unwanted keys “chatter” and erratic mouse movement?

Is there a Mac equivalent of the steadymouse software? It may be easier for folks with hand tremor to abandon the Mac if there’s no solution like that

Correct. It essentially turns your Mac computer into a Windows computer by installing a copy of Windows on part of the disk. You wouldn't be able to access macOS while using it, so I'm afraid that's not a solution if you need to use Apple apps (and yes, a cheap Windows machine would probably work better, as Boot Camp is really designed to allow the use of both macOS and Windows).

While macOS doesn't have a SteadyMouse equivalent, it does have Mouse Keys, which allows the use of the keys to move the mouse around the screen. You may want to try it out- see here for more information - Control the pointer using Mouse Keys on Mac - Apple Support

If you'd like to submit feedback to Apple regarding the addition of a mouse-steadying software, you can do so here - Product Feedback - Apple

I'm sorry I couldn't be of more help!

Yes, essential tremor. Annoying, but just got bad enough this year where I can’t use a MBP keyboard. I published a book in 2019, can’t type an email on my laptop keyboard now.

I’m talking with a neurologist about options. Considering brain surgery. Or, I could switch to a Windows machine just to use this one app that solves the problem. SteadyMouse is that helpful for cursor and key chatter, and Macs have nothing like it. Very frustrating.

I use Boot Camp regularly, and that would be a solution, however you don't seem too keen on that idea. Have you considered trying a trackball? I don't have ET, but I've heard that can be a solution for some people.

Another option is the use of the keyboard to control the mouse. See here for more information - Control the pointer using Mouse Keys on Mac - Apple Support

Additionally, you could try contacting SteadyMouse support to ask if they have plans for a Mac release of their software. It's a long shot, but it may be worth a try - SteadyMouse - Contact

Thanks! I just sent a Feedback to Apple, the more they hear the better. I also wrote to the Parallels folks which lets you run Windows apps while using MacOS. I don't think it will let you run windows utilities, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

My solution so far is I got a fancy keyboard with hot-swappable keys, so I can change the "stiffness" of keys that are triggering accidentally. A clumsy hardware fix, but I'm able to type at least, though the stiff keys may cause pain issues. I'm trying different trackballs and mice too. Some are better than others, but none as good as the software filtering something like steady mouse does. I sound like I'm talking myself into switching computers, it just seems unfortunate I may need to do that.

You should be able to install Windows on a partition with Boot Camp so that you can boot into it so that you can use the Steadymouse software.

I can't advise further as I've know absolutely nothing further about using Boot Camp or Parallels to install Windows on a Mac. But those who have already responded are more knowledgeable in that area than I and should be able to help.

I've talked with the developer (one person?) and Mac versions is on their list, but not timeline for when they'll be able to do it. I'm sure if Apple or someone decided to implement something like it it could get done faster.

I've never used it. Am I right that Bootcamp lets me run Windows on a Mac, but it doesn't let me run Windows apps like this mouse/keyboard utility while using MacOS? So if I need to use Bootcamp for accessibility to use my Mac hardware, I could do the same thing by getting a cheap Windows machine? I could use Bootcamp to try the Windows alternative out, but it's no solution if I can't use it to make MacOS apps accessible.

Thanks for your response. Those settings don’t quite address my problem. What Macs lack is something like Windows Key Filtering. If we had it it would fit right under the Key Repeat settings on the Mac Preference pane there 🤓
