Setting up mail

I can access my gmail accounts fine on my browser, but if I need to send an email directly from a website it redirects to mail.

Verify you have Safari set as the default browser and try again your mail setup.

Make Safari your default web browser on Mac - Apple Support

you can change it to your preferred browser after the fact

Just looking at your screen shots it appears that you failed to click on the Other Mail Account button in order to continue.
