Try adding the account while bootsed into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and to see if you can. Then reboot normally.
NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;
• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

Did you follow these instructions: Add an email account to Mail on your Mac - Apple Support
Where does it fail?
What error message do you get?
Thank you for answering. Yes I followed that and tried setting it up as a yahoo account and also tried as Other account.
It says that unable to verify account name or password.

Make sure that you know your correct email and password. Often after it is setup, you often forget how the password is stored as it is automatically provided. Passwords are case sensitive and make sure there is not a space on either side of the password. Use the provider's instructions for a Mac and Carefully follow them.
Didn't Yahoo buy bellsouth? I think that is where your problem is. Unless you have a Yahoo address, you probably cannot set it up as a yahoo account, so going to bellsouth is most likely the best way to start.
The hosts will be removing your image - it contains personal info and that is not safe ina public online forum.
Thank you, understood
The Apple Specialists that have tried resolving the issue have established that even though it says Password not valid the pw is in fact correct. Trying to get Bellsouth help now.
Will try this, thank you!
Thank you.
