Apple Music Often Unresponsive on Mac

Apple Music behaves strangely and inconsistently on my iMac Pro. I've run diagnostics (no issues) and refreshed my library in Music Preferences among a few other troubleshooting steps but when I hit the play button on an album or station, Music often does absolutely nothing. No acknowledgement in the UI or music played. Music works from my iPhone (using the same account) and does work on occasion from my Mac if only temporarily.

If I'm able to start an album or station successfully and then choose another song, hitting the play button on that song pauses the current piece being played but doesn't play the new one. I have to restart Music to get that to work.

I'm on Mac OS 12.5.1

Hello ben2ee,

Thanks for posting in the Apple Support Communities.

Since you're updated with the macOS version already, have you tried restarting your iMac Pro to see if that provides a better experience?

If a restart doesn't help, let's try setting up a test user account to see if the same occurs in Music. This will help to isolate if it's related to your specific user account or not. The following steps help with setting up a new user to sign into, and you can locate more details here: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac - Apple Support

Add a user

1. On your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups .

If the lock at the bottom left is locked , click it to unlock the preference pane.

2. Click the Add button below the list of users.

3. Click the New Account pop-up menu, then choose a type of user.

Administrator: An administrator can add and manage other users, install apps, and change settings. The new user you create when you first set up your Mac is an administrator. Your Mac can have multiple administrators. You can create new ones, and convert standard users to administrators. Don’t set up automatic login for an administrator. If you do, someone could simply restart your Mac and gain access with administrator privileges. To keep your Mac secure, don’t share administrator names and passwords.

Standard: Standard users are set up by an administrator. Standard users can install apps and change their own settings, but can’t add other users or change other users’ settings.

Sharing Only: Sharing-only users can access shared files remotely, but can’t log in to or change settings on the computer. To give the user permission to access your shared files or screen, you may need to change settings in the File Sharing, Screen Sharing, or Remote Management pane of Sharing preferences. See Set up file sharing and Share the screen of another Mac.

4. For more information about the options for each type of user, click the Help button in the lower-left corner of the dialog.

5. Enter a full name for the new user. An account name is generated automatically. To use a different account name, enter it now—you can’t change it later.

6. Enter a password for the user, then enter it again to verify. Enter a password hint to help the user remember their password.
7. Click Create User.

8. Depending on the type of user you create, you can also do any of the following:

• For an administrator, select “Allow user to administer this computer.”

• For an administrator, select “Allow user to reset a password using Apple ID.”

• Use Sharing preferences to specify whether the user can share your files and share your screen.

Let us know if this occurs in the test user account.

Have a great day!

Hi ben2ee,

Thanks for try that step and providing the additional info.

You mentioned doing some troubleshooting before posting, did you by any chance try the Music app in safe mode? This is a good way to determine if anything starting up with your Mac is casing the issues.

It may take longer to finish the start up, as safe mode does some system checks, and can sometimes resolve issues. You'll also see some differences in the display. This is expected with safe mode, and when you restart normally, they'll be gone.

https://support.apple.com/HT201262

How to use safe mode
Determine whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, then follow the appropriate steps:
Apple silicon
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
4. Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.
Intel processor
1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key as your Mac starts up.
2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window.

If the issue continues in safe mode
If the issue continues while in safe mode, or your Mac restarts several times and then shuts down while starting up in safe mode, you should reinstall macOS and make sure that your Apple software and third-party apps are up to date.

If the issue doesn't continue in safe mode
If the issue doesn't continue while in safe mode, leave safe mode by restarting your Mac normally. Then test for the issue again. The issue might be resolved.
If the issue returns after leaving safe mode, startup items are probably at fault. Apps can install such items in numerous places, and they aren't always easy to find or recognize. For that reason, you should first make sure that you've installed any available updates for your Apple software and third-party apps.
If updating your software doesn't help, try any of these solutions:
Test your login items.
•To learn whether software in your user account is causing the issue, set up a new user account, then log in to it and try to reproduce the issue in that account.
•Unplug all accessories from your Mac, including printers, drives, USB hubs, and other nonessential devices. You could have an issue with one or more of those devices or their cables.
Reinstall macOS.
If you still need help, please contact Apple Support.

Let us know how it goes, and hopefully these steps resolves this issue.

Take care!

ben2ee,

As recommended if the issue continues in safe mode a reinstall can help attempt to resolve the issue. If needed you can find more information here: How to reinstall macOS - Apple Support

Data isn't erased with a reinstall, yet you can create a backup of your information beforehand. How to back up your Mac

As you have multiple issues with syncing, you can also test another network. Access your messages on all your Apple devices If the issue remains, feel free to post a new question to the Apple Support Community or reach out to Apple Support directly to further assist.

I created a second account but it's unable to login to Apple Music. No error. Just spins a few seconds when I enter my password and goes back to where it was with no error. I'm an Apple premium subscriber. Tried regular browsing in that account on Safari so it is connected (hard wired) but Music's still acting strangely. It still plays SOME albums but the UI is strangely unresponsive other times. Test account notwithstanding.

Not necessarily related but my wired connection (gigabit via our home) does sometimes get lost. I either need to flip wifi on and back off or other times reboot. Never figured that one out. That's not likely the issue here in that it's far less frequent.

I am able to play music it's just that browsing Apple Music, the play buttons often do nothing at all. I just browsed for an album "Nilufer Yanya: Miss Universe". It shows a play button next to an album but nothing plays. No error. Other albums play. ("The Black Keys: Delta Dream"). Same with videos.

I did do one additional step which was to authorize the computer but it had no effect.
