I found that if you turn off VPN, connect to CarPlay, wait until Carplay is working, then turn on VPN, CarPlay works with VPN. But as soon as you disconnect CarPlay, you have to turn off VPN again and then reconnect to CarPlay.
By the way, I also upgraded to iOS 16.02 and I have ExpressVPN. So it maybe that this is only a problem with ExpressVPN. Kind of annoying to always have to turn off VPN, connect to CarPlay and then turn VPN back on.
I have an iPhone 13Pro and I was having the same issue. After updating to ios16 I also had updated my Chevy Colorado 2017 Z71 maps and I could not figure out why my CarPlay stopped working. I did multiple reboots and restores. I turned off settings and made my truck reboot and forget my iPhone multiple times. I even contacted GM Maps update and Apple Support all of whom could not help. I use Express VPN on my devices and after reading this thread and Turing off the VPN my CarPlay is working again. THANK YOU!
APPLE PLEASE MAKE AND UPDATE TO IOS16 THAT MAKES CARPLAY WORK WITH OTHER VPN SERVICES LIKE EXPRESS VPN.

Since continuing problems are only with Express VPN, I would contact Express VPN first to see if they know of the issue are in process of issuing an update.
I don't use Express VPN. Perhaps you meant to reply to someone else?
Hi to all,
I do not use VPN every day and for me VPN does not
have anything to do with this problem.
I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max which I updated to iOS 16.
After that update I had to do a hard reset on my car and on the iPhone. After
that everything worked like a charm.
I then updated to iOS 16.0.2 and after that nothing
works. I did a couple of hard resets on the car and the iPhone, but it just will
not connect. It is as if the iPhone is not sending any signals to the car. From
my perspective it is a software issue, since that is the only thing that
changed.
On Top of that while writing this feedback I tested with
my wife’s iPhone, which still has iOS 16, and it still works.
Apple needs to fix this.
The solution is to disable the vpn or go into the app then settings then Network Protection then switch off "block internet when unable reconnect vpn" . According to express after you exit the car you can turn it back on. Pretty convenient huh? Apple and express need to get their acts together.
Try opening the EVPN app. Bottom right choose "more" then settings. Under "Network Protection" uncheck "Block internet when unable to connect to vpn." It’s not a permanent fix but until apple and EVPN get their acts together it works.
Thank you! My CarPlay with Express VPN was working flawlessly until this past Tuesday (10/04/22) when it cut out on my commute home. Each attempt to connect left me with a blank screen. I have spent too much time in too many different forums trying to find a fix. As soon as I turned off the VPN, it connected without a hitch. Can't tell you how grateful I was to find your post.
Prior to iOS 16, CarPlay in my 2022 car to my Apple 12 Pro Max worked perfectly. Now on iOS 16, it will disconnect without warning. Followed all of the suggestions to fix it with limited success. The biggest issues I'm running into is that I can't hear or use text messaging. I can launch the text from Siri or manually, but the little circle is frozen. I will also see the red dot for new messages.
IOS16.1 recently updated in malaysia.. I have problem to listen to sound/music after connect to CarPlay. This is really troublesome because I’m often travel and not able to listen to music or listen to map instruction during driving.. it’s really troublesome for me.. I already did reset phone, reconfigure Bluetooth, CarPlay and I’m not using vpn.. need help from Apple to fix this. Really disappointment Apple still release this software although before fixing it to Malaysia
Have you tried a hard restart https://www.wikihow.com/Hard-Reset-an-iPhone?
Do you have tens of bluetooth configured? If so, might want to Forget all and then Stop/Restart BT then add again. This happened to me on v15.
I tried everything. The reset, the hard reset. I even tried to reset my car, but the only thing that now really helped was to go into the iPhone settings and delete the car that was configured in CarPlay. As soon as I did that I was able to reconnect with the car and my CarPlay works now again with iOS 16.1.
I do not use VPN. However the old faithful iPhone 5s works well without any issues.
I wonder if the devices we pay for are really worth it or just expensive pieces of well let’s say trash !!
PS: I currently use iPhone XR and iPhone 12.
these updates make me feel glad that I did back off when I wanted to upgrade to 14.
I had the exact same situation. I upgraded to iPhone14 Pro Max and just like that, Apple Car Play could not identify my new device. Thanks to the post that mentioned a VPN may be the problem, and it was my issue. Thank you Apple Community!
I have the same problem with my iPhone11 Pro Max. I also had the identical problem with the iOS15 upgrade and it took the best part of a year for Apple to fix … c’mon Apple! It’s one of the core features & a little more important than a new set of emojis.
