I'm having issues with the lightning/hdmi connector since iOS 16 update

I updated to iOS 16 and since then have had issues with the lightning/hdmi connecter with my tv. A couple apps work fine(Disney+) some work a little(Hulu, Prime Video) and some don’t work at all (HBO Max). Prime video will play but not have any audio, Hulu will only have audio during commercials, HBO Max works until the show starts playing then it kicks it off the tv onto only my phone screen. I’ve hard reset and all that and still no luck. My wife has the same phone (iPhone 13) but hasn’t updated yet and hers works perfectly

I gave up and was able to subscribe to broadband internet in my RV, though I really would have rather used my phone and the HDMI adaptor to stream using my Verizon unlimited data. So updating my IOS a couple months ago cost me 59.95 per month. My 50 GB of hotspot data was plenty for general internet usage every month on my laptop. But obviously not enough to network to my Apple TV box. So streaming the apps on my phone and using the HDMI adaptor was a great solution for streaming HBOmax and Netflix, etc. using unlimited device data.

Oh well. Now I know to NEVER update IOS until it's totally necessary, or at least waiting to read threads like this one that disclose issues that arise. Had I done that, I never would have updated and lost my ability to stream through my phone and display on my TV via the cable. It still seems ridiculous that Verizon is fine with me streaming as long as I watch on my phone using unlimited data, but simply watching the same stream, using the same amount of data, but mirrored to my TV, is so offensive to them.

Well, they still ‘work,’ just not for streaming services using your cell carrier unlimited data. I do think apple needs to clearly disclose on the marketing that these adaptors DO NOT support streaming services. Selling them with the claim that whatever is on your phone screen can be viewed on your TV, but having streaming services blocked, is very misleading.

Here is the product info on Apple's web page. They need to add a disclosure that content from streaming apps are blocked. Or there should be a class action suit. This is false advertising in my opinion. (bold/underlined emphasis added by me.)

*Use the Lightning Digital AV Adapter with your iPhone,

iPad, or iPod with Lightning connector. The Lightning Digital AV Adapter

supports mirroring of what is displayed on your device screen —

including apps, presentations, websites, slideshows, and more — to your

HDMI-equipped TV, display, projector, or other compatible display in up

to 1080p HD.

It also outputs video content — movies, TV shows,

captured video — to your big screen in up to 1080p HD. Simply attach the

Lightning Digital AV Adapter to the Lightning connector on your device

and then to your TV or projector via an HDMI cable (sold separately).*

This has become a bigger issue than just sub services through cellular data. If I’m on WiFi my iPad Pro M2 now only mirrors video. I found occasionally it magically works. If I restart my iPad prior to plugging into the adapter it works every time. Once I unplug and immediately plug back in back to mirror mode until I soft reset then boom plays video like normal again. I’m on iOS 16.3 and this is the only way I’ve found to even get YouTube to AirPlay through HDMI in full screen instead of mirroring.

If the problem is in fact because of carriers wanting to limit use of unlimited data, it's not universal on all apps. Some apps like Pluto TV still stream both video and audio just fine for me with the lightning to HDMI cable. So I'm not 100% sure that's the answer. If it was, why would Pluto TV and a couple others still work fine? I forget which of the ones I tried other than Pluto TV still work, but some do. Hulu only displays video without sound for me now Prime and Netflix also quit working.

I’m using iPhone 13, lightning cable to TV and all worked fine until updating to iOS16 like the rest of you.

I’m not entirely convinced it’s the carriers/hotspot/unlimited data related though.

I tried this at home while connected to my home Wifi, exact same. My Hulu has no sound and picture stutters horribly, unwatchable.

Interestingly enough, when I use my work iPhone 8 (iOS15-something) in my RV via lightning cable, it works perfectly.

Interesting. It did this once before and after a month it worked fine again so I keep trying hoping for it to work again. I have iphone 11 & have wondered if I do an upgrade to a newer phone if it would work. I randomly try all the time to see if it works again so far no but I haven’t tried in a few weeks. I will keep trying. Hulu is what I like to mostly stream and I hate paying for it when I can only watch from my phone & plugged to tv. I don’t have wifi. Or maybe even upgrade my tv. It is an older one!

iPhone 13 Pro, things are mostly back to normal on this issue after updating to 16.3.1. I had given up and in December was able to get wifi to my rv I'm living in. It actually was luxurious to use my Apple TV again, as well as have full-time wifi for my laptop without having to hotspot the phone for that. After reading these recent posts, I disconnected my Apple Tv box and hooked up the phone again using the HDMI adapter and cellular data, just to test.

Happy to report that Hulu, HBOmax, Netflix, Disney+ are all back in business. Still a bit glitchy...for instance when I switched from Netflix to Hulu, I had video but no sound. So I unplugged the adapter, closed the app, plugged it back in, and then restarted the app. All good. If things aren't working, try plugging in the adapter and then opening the app. For other apps, try starting the app/program on your phone and then plug in to the adapter. I was able to get all my apps streaming with sound and video, just with a bit of glitchiness as described. But to be fair, before the ios 16 update, I had similar glitchness. So things seem to be back to 'normal.'

When I take my rv up to my property for the summer again where I don't have wifi but have great cell service, it's good to know I'll be able to stream once again, or when traveling.

I guess the notion that this was done on behalf of the carriers to prevent using unlimited cellular data to stream via the cable was not correct after all. Though it sure seemed like it.
