Bluetooth stoped working since Monterey - Genius Bar couldn't fix it!

2019 iMac 27inch

I have tried every conceivable way to make bluetooth recognise my wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse. Everything was fine until I uploaded Monterey and I have the very latest 12.6 version. I even took my 27in iMac to the Genius Bar in Manchester and the technicians could not fix it! "passkey mismatch" keeps showing up. I have tried ALL the recommended ways to solve the problem but to no avail. I The technicians at Genius Bar tried many different keyboards and various Magic Mouse(s)In the end they gave up and said I should wait for a Monterey update, I have since updated 2 times and still no Bluetooth.

Anyone else having this problem?

iMac 27″, 12.6

For reference....

Troubleshooting Bluetooth Connectivity:

  • Use the MacBook Pro's Builtin Bluetooth adapter (Not a USB Bluetooth receiver).

You would only need to connect it once with the MacBook Pro. When you no longer need to use it, just delete it from the list of devices. Sometimes, you might need to reset the SMC.

  • Reset the Bluetooth Module:

Note that in macOS 12 Monterey, that Apple took away Reset the Bluetooth Module. So, see my user tip, and recommend that they bring this back, as I mentioned in my second reply. Go Here: Use "Reset the Bluetooth module" to Fix Constant Bluetooth Disconnections - User Tip.

TheLittles thanks for posting and for recommending to reset the bluetooth module.

I've just done this using the Terminal command and it's worked.................but it's only lasted 2 mins!

The keyboard was found instantly and paired right away and all functionality worked for a moment before same problems as before: right SHIFT key doesn't work, number keys won't work or add random letters etc..

I could accept that I may need to reset the bluetooth module every couple of months or so but after 2 mins?? Software patch/update needed please Apple.

You are welcome. Thank you for confirming that it was a fix (despite the fact of only 2 minutes).

So, where to go from here.

If a Bluetooth is Not Working.:

A. Open in Safe Mode:

In Safe ModeLogin Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. So, once booted in to Safe Mode, wait 30 seconds, and try opening it. Then boot up normally, attempting this once more. For instructions, go here: How to Use Safe Mode on your Mac - Apple Support

B. Single-Out this User:

What happens when you create a new Administrator user? do you still get this error? If not, then it it like an issue with the configurations of the current user. If so, then it is an issue of the macOS, in which case, you'd need to reinstall it.

C. Reinstall the macOS:

Go Here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple SupportImportant: Be certain to create a backup of your Mac prior to all of this. That way, you can have something to restore from the Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall. Once reinstalled, try this once more.

D. Provide your Feedback:

Do your Part: Inform Apple of your feedback. Apple wont get back to you directly, but the more feedback thy receive from its users, the more likely they will know what needs to be fixed.

  1. Go Here: Feedback - macOS - Apple
  2. Select: "Bug Report" for the "Feedback Type"
  3. Select: "Application/Utilities" for the "Feedback Area"
  4. Comment: on when you came across this issue and how you have troubleshot it thus far. Include the URL of this thread.
  5. Proceed from there as necessary.

Hi cocokent,

Yes I'm having exactly the same issues. First noted that some keys were't working such as the right SHIFT key and then also some of the number keys.

Tried unpairing the keyboard with the aim of establishing a new connection but despite my MacBook Air finding the keyboard the connection attempt fails. Occasionally, it will request that you enter a passkey on the keyboard but no dice.

This does seem to be a software issue albeit the Magic Mouse continues to work fine?

Dear AJC

Thank you for your reply. I have tried all the publicised fixes but in the end, I really hoped Apple would address the problem in one of their updates for Monterey, that however has not happed I am now on 12.6 and still no bluetooth. This issue only started on updating to Monterey in the first place. I wonder how many others are experiencing the same problem, I have seen quite a few Mac owners asking the same question but I wonder how many it will take for Apple to sort out this inconvenient problem - I despair!

Admittedly my issue has only become apparent in the last week since 12.6 update. All previous versions of Monterey have been ok on my 2018 MacBook Air.

in the past with similar Bluetooth issues on my IMac, I would delete the Bluetooth plist found in certain Library Preferences folders and this would resolve the issue. However, followed that guide last night and the problem remains. For me this does seem to be a gremlin within the latest update but accept that for others it may have been present since Monterey.

I hope this is not another Apple ploy to no longer support older equipment and force us all to buy new keyboards and mouses? My loyalty to the brand is wearing thin on iPhone iOS updates so don’t need the same shananigans on OSX!
