Pixelated screen using Apple CarPlay

This is not a new topic here, as far as I see, I think it is the right thing to open this discussion for those of you having new generation cars from the VW group:

The Apple CarPlay problems are not only on Honda models. My Skoda Octavia 4 (VW MIB3 Infotainment System) has the same problem.

When using navigation apps (Waze, Apple Maps, Google Maps) on both my iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 7, after a while, the navigation part of the screen is getting blurry.

Both iPhones have the newest updates, the car also. Restarting the iPhones or the car infotainment system doesn’t help.

You can refresh the blurred screen by changing shortly to a car menu and then back to Apple CarPlay. This holds for a while (5-10 Minutes) and then you go again.

How different car manufacturers technically "embed" Car Play or Android Auto may differ. Some car manufacturers may have tested it also a bit better or way in advance.

I think the worst case would be when the "embedding" is hardware-based only. Then manufacturers will have two choices - replace those modules physically in all cars or beg Apple to make changes on their key technology decisions, to keep it backward compatible.

Out of all options, I really hope it's Apple's bug :)

Finally had a reply from VW We Connect. Confirms future VW upgrade:

Thank you for your patience.

Kindly be informed that there will be a new software for your system which will fix the issue but is not available yet.

The actual plan is that it would be available in CW04/23 but this is not guaranteed.

Feel free to contact your workshop by that time and ask for software-version 840.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may be causing you and we thank you for your patience.

I just got a message from the VW suppoert (App Connect Support) that they have found a sollution and that they will contact my local dealer to instruct them how to fix it. Based on what I read here (Update 840 to be rolled out in CW04/2023) I assume that they will manually install the update (beta test?). Ill make an appointment now and keep you posted.

My Seat did not have any updates in the last months, and it started only recently on my 3 yr old iPhone 11.

My wife's new iPhone 11, bought a few days ago and upgraded on 16.2 for now does not have any issue, so my conclusion is that it is Apple related.

VW/Seat services and support, I do not have any positive experiences related to software updates, so personally I do not rely on their answers.

I installed an aftermarket BOSS Audio Systems BVCP9850W Wireless CarPlay into my Jeep Wrangler and have been having the same Pixelated screen problems, stemming from the use of google maps after a while of driving. as others have said - jumping back to the stereo menu screen and then back into car play will reset things, but only for a 3-4 minutes or so. I returned the Radio for a replacement and the same problem persists. I'm not sure it's VW issue at all - rather a CarPlay issue with the use of maps. I am using wireless car play, have not tried wired yet (and don't want to).

Folks, for consideration,

most modern car plants are simply assembly lines compiling parts that can be made all over the world - and not under the one roof.

… imagine (for a minute) that VW, Honda, BOSS and whoever else don’t actually make the hardware (head units) that we have in our cars and that they just buy that tech in from a 3rd party supplier ….somewhere. But that hardware for VW,Honda, Boss, etc .is all the same at it’s core.

Now consider, that Apple do an update - and we all blame apple for our pixelated screens .. when their only responsibility is to make sure that that their update works with “apple” devices …not 3rd party hardware.

The makers of the hardware have already been paid by the car /audio manufacturers to make sure the affected hardware works with a previous IOS and … as I see it, they aren’t too bothered to rectify the situation that now exists without negotiating a really good deal for themselves with said manufacturers.

Other car and audio brands are out there - and they are not experiencing the issue … perhaps their hardware is made by different suppliers.

Sound feasible?

I don’t think so, and there is a very simple reason. Before iOS 16 Carplay was working just fine in my car. My car has not changed a bit, iOS has, so it has to be has simple that something has changed in the phone software that has broken map apps.

I hope that Apple is aware of the problem and it is working to find a solution and fix the bug.
