Pixelated screen using Apple CarPlay

This is not a new topic here, as far as I see, I think it is the right thing to open this discussion for those of you having new generation cars from the VW group:

The Apple CarPlay problems are not only on Honda models. My Skoda Octavia 4 (VW MIB3 Infotainment System) has the same problem.

When using navigation apps (Waze, Apple Maps, Google Maps) on both my iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone 7, after a while, the navigation part of the screen is getting blurry.

Both iPhones have the newest updates, the car also. Restarting the iPhones or the car infotainment system doesn’t help.

You can refresh the blurred screen by changing shortly to a car menu and then back to Apple CarPlay. This holds for a while (5-10 Minutes) and then you go again.

So, I partially solved the problem. I have VW Passat 2021 with infotainment soft version 0809. iphone 13 with iOS 16.2

I did update of infotainment system, but the problem is still existing.

The problem occurs when you use carplay and at the same time your phone is charged from car's usb slot.

I checked both usb slots and sveral lighting/usb-C cables.

Carplay is working properly (without blurring screen and delays) when You use Bluetooth connection only.

issue is due to the fact Waze and Google Maps in their last version are sending 60 Frame Per Seconds (60 FPS) via Carplay to the multimedia units. VW MIB3 is answering to the iPhone that it is able to support 60 FPS, but in reality it can only support 30 FPS... so after a few minutes the memory buffer is overloaded and can't follow... the solution is that VW should say to Carplay that it can only support 30 FPS

If you use USB cable the screen will not be affected. However need to make sure that it is not still using WiFi while connected via USB.

If you are connected via WiFi while plug in via USB, you will see a battery charging icon at the phone status at the top right/left (depending on where you are).

If it is connected via USB, you won't see a battery icon.

Tried the usb solution as I noticed it was on Wi-Fi before finding this thread..for me it worked for less than a minute..the 5g bar was on 3 bars also so it’s not a streaming issue, this is so frustrating,I was a golf mk8 which Vw are having back soon as they can’t fix the very dangerous problem it has of thinking I’m driving on the wrong side of road..ie lane assist pulls me to the wrong side only to perform an emergency stop and it thinks I’m undertaking on motorways etc..again applying the brakes…CarPlay was the only thing working right and now this🙄

I had also run into this issue as everyone else.

Well I was digging around a bit. The issue only comes forward if the CarPlay screen is not using the old standard (800x480px (5:3) aspect ratio - see the image attached.)

The only thing I was not able to find out, if the issue is related to the amount of pixels or the aspect ratio.

The german car manufacturers are suffering from this because they started using the Wider ( 16:9 and or 8:3 ) configurations.

You might know that the carplay or android auto hardware in the headunits are tehcinally just like a screen. They display the image sent by the devices and returning the input from the car. The audio is Bluetooth.

It's still mind bending that it takes that long for the companies to figure out how to fix this.

Try asking your dealer for a software update (you need to take your car to your dealer, no over-the-air update, at least for now). Users with a VW and Skoda (included me for Skoda) have solved this issue by updating the software, VW-related car companies and dealers are aware of the problem and have already released a fix.

My whole apple play becomes very slow when this pixilation starts. Yes you can rectify it for about 3-4 minutes , but if you’re in a town it can take ages for the system to become responsive and so you miss turnings. Im just not bothering to use Google Maps now , which is bad. I’m just using Waze or TomTom via apple Play and they both seem fine. Apple Maps often takes me to the wrong location so I’ve stopped using this too.

If it’s something on the headunit makers side then we can hope that they will be able to figure it out before the cars warranty expire. Last time my car was in the dealership’s repairshop for a 6 hour update cycle - they enabled wireless android auto since the unit was created without the function - they pushed a 30GB update to it, so we can forget OTA. The manufacturers gods help us, they will get there in time otherwise it will be broken forever…
