iOS 16.1 Face ID not working

I updated to 16.1 on Monday and today my Face ID is no longer working, rebooted, cleared Face ID and now I cannot register a Face ID. I am able to place my face in the square but it tells me to place iPhone lower or higher. I tried adjusting the iPhone to no avail.

I talked them into doing an express switch around without paying the 99€ fee that would have been left although my phone is still inside Apple care. They said they couldn't do it because it wasn't damaged from a drop or anything but I told them that it was their fault, so they got frustrated and did the switch without me paying the fee.

After trouble shooting my phone remotely with apple support, and they performing a remote diagnostic scan that said my phone was in perfect health, they set up an appointment at the Apple Store for me.

The Genius at the Apple Store did an advance diagnostic scan that did show that my TrueDepth camera had an issue. Unfortunately it was an out of pocket repair of $279 since my 13PM was out of warranty and I did not have AppleCare. Repair took 1 hour 20 mins. I was told by their genius that *IF* Apple announces a service program for TrueDepth cameras on the iPhone 13s, then my paid repair would be eligible for reimbursement.

He’s not wrong. I’m glad yours is working but mine and a lot of other peoples Face IDs were completely broken after 16.1. Never dropped my phone and did every bit of trouble shooting possible. Employees at the Apple Store tried to replace the camera but ended up damaging the speaker next to it because Apple makes things ridiculously hard if not impossible to repair. I agree that arguing with the guys in the store is not going to work. But this is definitely an issue that Apple as a company needs to address.

It's good if Apple covers it past warranty :)

I'm happy for you if you did not have to because they acknowledged the problem.

I know that in the past they did extended warranty for some Macs, did Apple mentioned to you that they will do something for this problem as well, or it was just someone at Apple waiving the fees for you as a commercial gesture, so not official yet?

I did read it and understood u did that so did I. Raise some heck and they replaced it. You just have to push back. But it is what it is wasn’t being mean to you. Was just saying how Apple does their customers. Triggered much. U can keep making fun of me I didn’t pay a dime to get mine fixed but I guess I’m wrong… have a merry Christmas and a happy new year

I’ve been to the Apple Store 2X now (highly inconvenient BTW) and the FaceID diagnostics show no issues, ran a full diagnostic on my phone, again, no issues. Agreed to do a full factory reset of my phone, lost countless contacts even though we did a back up prior to taking in and again in store, worked while in store, stopped working about 3 hours later.

The “fix” mentioned to me if the factory reset didn’t work was to replace the front true depth camera but if this is a software issue that won’t fix anything.

Super frustrated!

This is same thing is happening to me. After updating to IOS 16.1, my face id worked then completely stopped until I wiped the phone and then when I restore it, it works for a day then stops working completely again and will not allow you to re-add your face. Apple store employee told me to live with it or wipe my phone and do not use backup. When you spent over 10 years setting up your apps and phone, not using backup is not an option. He would not replace my phone after countless hours on the phone with Apple and them telling me to go to store to replace phone. Buying Applecare is useless because they won’t replace it and do not help. I have an iPhone 13 Pro. I have wiped and restored my phone twice and this only works temporarily. I have updated to 16.2 and still not working. I have no screen protector or case covering screen.

This works!! I've tried everything, reset, reboot, removing the screen protector etc... Nothing... Until I read your tapping suggestion and thought I'd give it a go. Must admit, I felt like a bit of an idiot but for sure, it worked.

My process. First screen kept telling me to move the phone lower, then higher, then lower etc. Started tapping the screen around the top camera and suddenly, I got to the next screen with the prompt to begin moving my head, again nothing, so I began tapping again and it started following my head movement. Hey presto! It's now fully functional again :) THANK YOU Providence94 :)
