I updated to 16.1 on Monday and today my Face ID is no longer working, rebooted, cleared Face ID and now I cannot register a Face ID. I am able to place my face in the square but it tells me to place iPhone lower or higher. I tried adjusting the iPhone to no avail.

Interesting... I wonder what they'll do for the other people who had to pay for their phones to be replaced.

This has worked for me so far, thanks! The reset only required a single face scan. No other workaround fixed the issue that showed up after the iOS update.
I’ve got 16.2, and just now noticed FaceID not working when I tried to reset it. As you said, it keeps asking me to raise our lower the phone. 😡
Thousands of defective phones. Same problem after update on xs max. I downgraded to 15.7 but unfortunately the problem persists
I have the same issue with an iphone 13 Pro max since ios 16 update. The face id used to work flawlessly before when the phone was on ios 15.

I have the same issue and Apple says it’s an hardware issue and is charging me $279 to fix it. I am puzzled because how can it be an hardware issue, when the issue was trigger by their OS update.
maybe try the tap method!
Is there any video to show how and where to tap to make the faceid work ?

Face ID isn’t working and I cannot access any of my working apps, e.g., my passwords app!!!
Apple just released 16.3 and they did not fixed the issue!!!
