Problems macOs Ventura and Photos App.

After downloading macOs Ventura to my iMac. Editing photos in the Photos app is having problems. I use a Nikon Z7, i shoot in raw. Photos are nice and clear from the camera card. When i edited thru Photos App, photos are blurry and not focused. Had no problems with Monterey. Called Apple support, no help.

Yep, it's all related. I'll upload a group of photos and the blurriness doesn't clear up until I go into edit mode. Also, arbitrarily, I'm unable to export to the desktop by dragging and dropping the file. Here is a screen capture of an error I get perhaps 30% of the time. It seems arbitrary in that it may not happen will a file on either side of that one. I'm able to work around it most of the time, but what an annoying bug because there doesn't seem to be any way to anticipate it.

Did you export the unmodified original to view it in Preview.

Does affinity use the Apple RAW engine or its own?

I suggest that the Apple RAW engine is defaulting with the sharpness value set wonky to cause the blur. If you reset the sharpness in Photos it should fix itself, though it should not happen in the first place. I have asked on the Canon board if anyone else has noticed this behavior.

Oh if it was that simple. What sharpness value are you referring to, the settings in the editor? No, that has no impact. None of the settings impact the blurriness. It is also intermittent with some pictures, making it even MORE frustrating.

I'm using the exact same workflow as I've done for 20 years. The sharpness settings in the editor have nowhere near that impact, but regardless, the blurry and sharp photos are at the exactly the same settings. When I updated to Ventura, I made no changes to any settings.

I've been using iPhotos and now Photos since Cheetah in 2001, so I'm reasonably well versed in its operation.

Good idea. Although, a single, arbitrary adjustment to the blurry version followed immediately by reverting to the original is enough to get back a sharp image. That avoids having to do any serious editing on the blurry version.

I forgot to mention in my original post that I also have the RAW Power extension installed in Photos. When I edit with RAW Power, images that import blurry because of the bug are saved as sharp as the originals in my camera.

My issue seems to be resolved. My library is on an external HD, 1.3 TB in size. I had my library on a Crucial X8 SSD, speed up to 1050 Mb/s. Any raw images that were edited would be out of focus and would not transfer to my iPad for iPhone. I have moved my library to a Sandisk Extreme Pro, speed up to 2000 Mb/s. Now the images are in focus and the images transfer to my iPad and iPhone.

I am using a Nikon D850 and shoot RAW only. Since the Ventura upgrade, after making an edit when I return to look at the picture in full screen, it comes up blurry. A work around is to click the Edit button and then the image is rendered at full resolution.

I don't know if this is related but a lot of the same pictures that appear blurry unless I go into Edit mode are also in the "Unable to Upload" folder in Photos and are not syncing to iCloud and my other devices.

There are multiple issues asw editing/using RAW photos in Ventura's version of Photos. Fuzziness of image as noted is one. Another is that any edits followed by a zoom action will tend to lock the zoom scale to one scale regardless of where the adjustment setting slider is set. Finally, in export the whole app tends to bind up, becoming non-responsive and displaying the spinning beach ball, forcing a quit.

Alas, it's still glitchy. After the update to 13.2 on an M1 Max, some, not all, RAW images in photos contend with non-responsive zoom slider and image fuzziness until "edit" is selected at which point the image clears up and the zoom slider works again. It's a frustrating inconvenience in usability but for now can be worked around, I guess.

I have only been working on the extant library so far. What you suggest will be a good test, though. I will have to go out and get some fresh shots and see if it persists. So far, I've just been running the sequence of button pushes on some raw images to see if there is some link to other setting/editing selections. These raw files, from a Sony A7riii are running ca 75-90 megs and I can't help but wonder if that is part of the issue although I can't imagine why.

I feel your pain. At times, Apple's attention to glaring issues is really uneven, then for middling issues they overachieve spectacularly. I had an issue with the charging sequence on my M1 Max pro laptop when it came out wherein it seemed the laptop would not charge and the cable connector would blink erratically when plugged in. I ended up with a dedicated support specialist who over the course of a week and maybe 10 calls from him to me worked to troubleshoot the issue, pulling logs and documenting the behavior that other users here had also experienced. When an incremental update several days later did not resolve the issue, he arranged to have my laptop replaced with a new one of the same configuration which was not my intent, but was delighted with.

Maybe it is the difference between how they respond to hardware vs software issues. I do wish it was more consistent, however.

I am having the same problem with RAW images imported from my Olympus OMD 10. The problem began immediately after upgrading to Ventura. Also now having problems editing photos with PixelmatorPro. I receive an error message; "An error occurred while preparing external edit. The operation couldn't be completed. PHPhotosErrorDomain error 3306". All images imported post-ventura-upgrade are impacted.

I've also had a similar issue (although I've never used Pixelmator). I DID have an error message when attempting to drag a photo to my desktop. The problem is less of an issue now since downloading the most recent update to Ventura. I'm currently running 13.2.1 Is is far less problematic with this most recent update, so I assume the issue was at least addressed as opposed to resolved. I've tested it several times since 13.2.1 with no issues. I'm shooting uncompressed RAW on my Sony A7iii. The work around for me initially was to open the file in Photos and then edit in Affinity (used as a plug in) and saving the file in Photos. It SEEMS to be working fine now however, and the editing seems to be working well without the aid of Affinity. I'm going out later this afternoon for a more extensive shoot and I'll report back with any issues. I'll be shooting in Raw, uncompressed Raw and JPEG, so I should have a good representative sample.

Edited Nikon D850 RAW photos still blurry in Apple Photos on brand new Mac M2 Mini fully up to date with Ventura 13.2.1.

This is still happening - I just got a new M2 Mac mini last week. Syned my Photos library to it - I have "Download Originals to this Mac" enabled. Storage is all internal using the SSD that came in the Mini. So this is brand new and vanilla - I took some pictures today. Imported them from an XQD card directly into Photos. I am shooting the highest quality RAW the D850 will shoot ("NEF (RAW)" and Image size "RAW Large") with "C" firmware version 1.20.

Here is a crop of what the image looks like in thumbnail or zoomed in view after I edited it - it is grainy and missing detail:

However- If I click the "Edit" button in Photos, it finally shows up as it should:
