Well clearly you have an internet connection, otherwise you wouldn't be posting here. What it would seem to me is either the scanner has its own built-in internet access which is not set up right, on its own panel and it needs to be hooked up with your WiFi, or it needs to be hard wired to your computer to get internet access to establish updates for the scanner's own built-in software.
Most scanners offer USB connections to the computer to get direct connectivity.

If you can program WiFi to the device while hard wired to match the Mac's built-in WiFi network connection, or manually program it on the device's LCD to be connected to the same WiFi, the device can use the AIrprint functionality to connect over WiFi.
